    Jeter Downs

Feel free to post about the Reds newest SS prospect and #32 overall pick in this thread.

I, for one, already like the almost 19 year old more than Alfredo Rodriguez.

I'll be very shocked if Garcia makes it to the majors as a shortstop. Downs is what Cozart would have been out of high school, I think. Don't mind the pick.

Nothing not to like about a SS who could feature five tools. I'd like to see what materializes with him before prophesying too much, but maybe he's cut from the Orlando Cabrera mode.
Wait until the year after next year.

MLB has Downs as having better power than Garcia and slightly better fielding while being a little bit slower and smaller.

Yeah I like him better than Garcia as well.

The one thing AlfRod has over both of these guys is there's no question that he's sticking at SS. A big part of all of their value lies in staying there.

I'm pretty happy we finally have a handful of guys who are intriguing SS prospects. AlfRod, Garcia, and now Downs should be exciting to watch develop.

Downs has a perfect shortstop toolset, with above-average range at shortstop, a 55-60 arm, all combined with solid reliability and instincts for his age. He has a good chance to stick at the position. His running speed is above average (55 or 60 depending on the source) in pure timing terms but he is an effective and aggressive baserunner which helps the speed play up. He could steal 20 bases per year.

Offensively, he is a line drive hitter who has started to show more power this spring, enough to quell concerns that he needed to develop his bat in college. His makeup, work ethic, and presence on the field are all positives.

In that video above he was a weird little "hitch" in his throwing motion nearly every time.
The lowest acceptable payroll amount for ownership to show they are not greedy pigs is 15 million more than they are currently paying. No matter what that currently is.

I just read that he was actually named after Derek Jeter. I guess if you didn't take the original then take the kid that was named after him Can't hurt can it?

Agreed on Garcia- especially now with both AlfRod but more importantly an almost 19 year old Downs in the system, I think we see Garcia end up as a 2B or a CF before long. I wonder if Javier Baez could be a good comp for Garcia- especially is future role.

With Alf Rod, Greene, Downs, and Garcia all 22 or under, it would seem the Reds have covered the SS slot for 2021 and forward.

    Re: Jeter Downs

Love this pick, especially coupled with the Garcia signing. Reds went from having zero to two 5-tool guys who can stick at SS, with Downs the more likely of the two.

It is a bit naive to consider Greene even a marginal SS prospect. He'll be a SP for the Reds who hopefully can swing the bat with more authority than your average SP.

They still need to sign Downs. And then there is the matter than one or more of them have to progress to the big leagues as a shortstop.

I like Downs. He's solidly built for a HS kid. Might mean he outgrows the position though. His swing looks good to me - simple and fluid, but I'm no expert.
