Finding out if he looks as good against ML hitters is the smart move, just letting him hit the minor league FA market without even giving him a try would have been pretty lame. It won't be a lot of innings but will give a better idea of whether he's worth the roster spot. They can always waive him later

Here's an interesting, rather random note on Deck from the New York Post.

A FB up to 95 and a plus slider 85-88, the original scouting report, was what he showed in his last appearance. Perhaps the increase in velocity can be attributed to shorter stints. To me, he has looked better than Wojo, Farrell, or Shackelford. Better breaking ball and FB command.

Can confirm that he was not throwing that hard as a starter this season. At least not on any sort of regular basis.

If he can get there consistently as a reliever, I like him enough to give him a 40-man spot to start Spring Training next year.

What are RZ's expectations for his start? It will be interesting to see if the RP velocity holds or if he drops down to what he showed in Pensacola as a starter. He is going against a team with a psychological letdown, but which is very much alive for a wild card. I'd be happy with 5 IP, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K. Still thinking he is kept as a reliever.

Deck could start Tuesday and Sunday. So Reds may be able to look at him twice in a starting role.

If he does ok, I think he makes the forty man roster. Probably competes for a middle/long relief role in ST.

I suspect, due to his effectiveness out of the 'pen (and stuff), he'll have a great chance to be on the 40-man regardless.

But a good outing or two certainly wouldn't hurt his cause.
