Labor Day Minor League Highlights

The Dragons won, 10-1 without Taylor Trammell or Jose Siri. Yari had 3 hits including a double, a single, and a HR. Sparks went 2 for 4. Vargas was 2 for 3. Morgan Lofstrom, just up from Billings, had 3 hits in 5 trips to the plate. But the star of the game was Michael Beltre, with 4 hits in 5 trips. Matt Blandino scattered 8 H, allowing 1 ER in 4.1 IP. Alex Webb, doing him one better, allowed nothing in 3.1 IP aside from one measly H.

Pensacola won, 5 - 1 over Jacksonville. Gavin LaValley had 3 hits and Aristides Aquino had 2 more, including his 17th HR. Jesus Reyes went the first 5, allowing 8 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, and 1 K. Reyes has put together a very interesting season. 142.1 IP, 143 H, 112 K, 48 BB. ERA right around 3.50.

Rookie Davis continued to be nearly adequate on the AAA season, allowing 3 ER in 5.0 IP. He did have 3 BB, 6 K, and allowed only 4 H. He now has a 4.77 ERA. Sebastian Elizalde had 2 H. Iribarren, Dixon, Blandino, and Sweeney had one apiece. The Bats lost, 6 - 2.

Rookie Davis continued to be nearly adequate on the AAA season, allowing 3 ER in 5.0 IP. He did have 3 BB, 6 K, and allowed only 4 H. He now has a 4.77 ERA.

I really hoped he had turned a corner with 8 inning game but the last two outings of the season were pretty disappointing, but at least the strikeouts have reemerged.

He didn't play today in Louisville's season finale but I have to figure Eric Jagielo's days are numbered. .161/.283/.195 with the Bats and .204/.323/.291 on the year in total. What a huge disappointment he's been, it seems the 2015 knee injury he suffered with AA Trenton sapped him of his power and the Reds got a shell of a player.

It depends on how you measure it. It's absolutely one of the worst returns on a valuable asset in recent memory, but Chapman was an impending free agent. Trading away controllable future MVP winner Josh Hamilton still seems more egregious.

This is spot they 5 more years of control of Hamilton imagine him in the outfield on those playoff teams. They got a back end starter for him. The mistake the reds made with Chapman was trading him when they did

Both of those trades show that Reds ownership can't stomach bad press and controversy. Why that is, I'm not sure. But it is. Then again Hamilton begat Volquez who begat Latos who begat Disco, so it's not the worst trade I don't think. Chapman's was worse, IMO.

I'm a "judge the trade at the time it was made" evaluator. We all knew the Chapman trade was horrible the moment it was made. As for the Hamilton trade, we knew he had a lot of potential, but we also knew it would be a challenge for him to live up to it. He had a BABIP-fueled MVP season for the ages, but otherwise his true talent level as a player was about the same as 2008 Volquez. Volquez got hurt and never repeated that performance, but it at least gave us a perspective of what the Reds were trying to accomplish with that trade...
