    2017 Minor League PoY

    Pick a pitcher and a hitter.

    Who you got?

    Why?

    If you're daring, make an end-of-season All-Star team too.

    Rules
    One player at each position
    Five starters
    Three relievers

    Somebody is gonna have to make a case for me to believe it's not Siri and Mahle. Other than RF I don't see any positions for the all-star lineup that are both interesting and competitive. Catcher and shortstop are a wasteland (I wouldn't consider anybody below Dayton for such an all-star roster)...

    How about Senzel? The only reason I'd take Siri over him is because Nick only played 100 games. Other than that, Senzel outperformed Siri at the plate by a fair margin. (No points awarded for the hitting streak or because Siri exceeded expectations)

    Siri is a fine choice but I'd take Senzel.

    Re: 2017 Minor League PoY

    Senzel and Mahle for me. Mahle gets the nod over Castillo due to Castillo only having been in the minors for half the season.

    (Senzel is about 3 weeks younger than Siri)

    Senzel .321/.391/.514/.905 at A+/AA age 22 57 XBH, 14 steals 119 games

    Siri .293/.341/.530/.871 at A age 22 59 XBH, 46 steals 126 games

    Both make good arguments with Senzel getting the edge for me due to the more advanced levels and higher OBP though Siri's power/speed performance was very impressive.

    Edit: Siri with 6 SF to non by Senzel. This could tip things the other way.

    Re: 2017 Minor League PoY

    Senzel was all that anyone could want him to be, and solidified his status as the best position prospect in the system, but Siri simply did too much to deny as PoY.

    * record hitting streak for Midwest League
    * first 20-40 man (homers-steals) in league for 35 years
    * first in league in total bases (by 37)
    * first in slugging
    * first in hits
    * first in steals
    * first in runs
    * tied for first in triples
    * second in OPS
    * second in HR
    * and by all accounts, played a wonderful center field

    Greene threw 4 1/3 innings which is at least 70 innings short of what I would have needed to consider him for this list.

    Re: 2017 Minor League PoY

    The argument for Mahle is not unlike the one for Siri. While Castillo emerged as probably the organization's best pitching prospect, he threw only 80 innings in the minors. Mahle, meanwhile, led the system's starters in both ERA (2.06) and WHIP (0.963) while pitching at the top two levels. And threw a perfect game.

    For the record, the other pitching leaders among starters:

    Innings -- McGuire
    Strikeouts -- McGuire
    K/9 -- Moss
    BB/9 -- Blandino
    K/BB -- Castillo
    HR/9 -- Carreno (or Valenzuela with at least 75 IP, Ross with at least 100 IP)
    H/9 -- McGuire

    Siri did what he did at the plate while also playing excellent CF defense and was a terror on the basepaths. That, along with his playing time advantage, are what keep him ahead of Senzel for me...

    Mahle and Senzel
    (Referring to Jack Hannahan signing with a Korean team)
    Since there are no teams on the moon, I guess South Korea's far enough from Cincinnati to satisfy me.

    Mahle (with Jose Lopez running second) and Senzel (with a big attaboy to Siri).
    Wait until the year after next year.

    In the Air Force they used to say that performance that fell short of formal recognition still earned you an 'Attaboy". And that one "Aw ****" wiped out 10,000 attaboys.
    The lowest acceptable payroll amount for ownership to show they are not greedy pigs is 15 million more than they are currently paying. No matter what that currently is.
