I always wondered why the Reds couldn't have a team in that league. Back in the 70's the Reds had a pretty good following in NE Tennessee. I don't think it is so much now. Anyway this is about 30 years too late for me but I do hope they do well in Greeneville.

I am excited for this. My in-laws live in Pulaski, VA where the Yankees Appy League team is. Pulaski has had quite a few afflictions over the years, and Aaron Harang played there.

    Pulaski Counts (1942, 1946–1950)
    Pulaski Phillies (1952–1955)

    Pulaski Phillies (1969–1977)
    Pulaski Braves (1982–1992)
    Pulaski Rangers (1997–2002)
    Pulaski Blue Jays (2003–2006)
    Pulaski Mariners (2008–2014)
    Pulaski Yankees (2015–present)

I find the Appy League a step below the Pioneer league in development level, but I 'm loving this move by the Reds Brass.

FWIW.... Reds formerly had Appy league Teams in Wytheville,VA (now defunct with Pulaski nearby) and Princeton, WV (now the Rays)... both are around where I 77 and I 81 meet.

Pulaski isn't the only one to have a few "afflictions" over the years!

Any idea why the teams in the Appalachian League (like the Arizona League) have the same name as the "parent" club? I kind of like the unique names/mascots with minor league teams, but I do enjoy that it is easier to remember who is affiliated with whom.

The prospect of the Reds in Greeneville thrills me. I live about 45 minutes away and also only about 15 minutes from the Cardinals and Twins affiliates so I would see a lot of the Reds! The stadium at Greeneville is very nice. I met Roger Clemmens there a few years ago when his son was in the Astros organization.

I'm not even sure there are owners of these "franchises". I think the Reds just come in and operate them.
The lowest acceptable payroll amount for ownership to show they are not greedy pigs is 15 million more than they are currently paying. No matter what that currently is.

Here's the Enquirer story on it from Zach Bucannan

I've long wondered why the club didn't add another short season club, particularly given the players in the pipeline from Latin America.

The Enquirer piece indicated the Reds will be the owner of the Greeneville club, which means no franchise agreement. They've got the team until they decide they don't want it anymore.

My thoughts exactly. It looks like a strategic move to expand the pipeline to accommodate greater numbers of Latin players. It seemed to me that greater numbers moved stateside this past season. Latin players enter the system younger and it is even more difficult to predict how well they will develop since so many years of rapid development are still ahead of them. One strategy is to treat that population as a numbers game. This looks like a sound move to me.

Pulaski Yankees are owned by a local Auto Dealer. He even renovated a local hotel for the team to stay at vs. being hosted by locals.

Yankees do this with the Pulaski Appy League team. High percentage of the roster is Latin Players - more than half for sure.

I think the key quote from the article was having the ability to get more players full-time playing time.

From the Greeneville Sun; not much new here.

    https://www.greenevillesun.com/news/...74c514926.html

It occurs to me that this is also a good move from a marketing standpoint, since Greeneville is less than 300 miles from Cincy. It broadens the Reds network. The club's radio network has one affiliate in Nashville, TN and another in Gate City, VA which is 8 miles north of Kingsport, TN. But building interest in the Reds via this affiliate, once it's players make their debut with the big club (likely 4 or 5 years coming).

Re: Reds to field Appy League team?

There are a lot of Reds fans in the Greeneville area. The area is mostly made up of Reds and Braves fans. Many of the Appy league teams are owned by the towns or by organizations set up by the towns. It's a great hometown atmosphere in the Appy league. Most all players are hosted by local families in their homes since it is a short season and it is often their first time really being away from home. As another poster said, at least half of the players are from Latin America. I go to a lot of games in Elizabethton which is a Twins affiliate. They have been with the Twins since 1974 but the Twins are threatening to leave unless the City spends a million to upgrade the ballpark. Sad. A lot of great players started there. Greeneville has a beautiful ballpark and I am excited to see the Greeneville Reds! (Sounds odd, doesn't it?)
