Maybe he likes the idea of playing in a small market with a small ballpark. He may also like the idea of being the first Japanese player on the last team to have a Japanese player. Who knows. But it's good that the Reds are out there competing in that market, even if the odds are long in this case.

I'd promise him anything I could legally/ethically promise him, to get a $200 million for $300K. I just don't know what the selling point would be, if money isn't the driving point. No recent success. No DH. Votto blocking him at 1B.

Could the Reds sign him for $300k and then sign him to an extension worth millions?

A few of the fangraphs writers have speculated on this. You’d look have to make it look close (and wait about a year) to what some of the recent early extension guys have been offered/given. MLB will be looking but short of buffoonery there’s really no way they could stop such a wink and a nod agreement.

I think you'd be playing with fire, but lets see what happens to the Braves. Maybe Fire isn't so bad.

This is one of the few things that would make me do a complete 180 on optimism. It would change my opinion of the entire franchise going forward.

They can literally only offer $300,000. Some teams can trade for enough pool space to offer just north of $10M (but less than $11M). There is no penalty anymore. You can only spend what you're "allowed". You can't go over.

The Reds might not be able to offer him much of a signing bonus, but can they offer him a MLB deal? If they plunk him straight into the majors (starting pitching plus regular work in the OF) and pay him, say, $8M per season, I'd think that would make the signing bonus a bit of a non-issue.
Wait until the year after next year.

Why wouldn't every team do that?

No, they can't. He has to go through the "amateur" system. Signing bonus, 6 full years of MLB team control. League minimum, then arbitration for four years (I'll assume he is a Super 2 guy because there's no way someone is sending him to the minors).

What is likely to happen, though, is that after a year or two he signs an extension deal where he gets paid real money to buy out the arb years and maybe a year of FA.

The Reds seem to have backed off on Hunter Greene’s two-way dreams.

Maybe he heard that Cincinnati has something called a five-way.

From what I understand, Hunter Greene is the one who backed off Hunter Greene's two-way dreams.

I think Ohtani has already put in the work that Greene has only just realized is so daunting.
