Anyone ever deal with a blood clot on the brain?

My wife has a blood clot on her brain that caused a seizure a week and a half ago. They kept her in the hospital for a week then sent her home with blood thinners and misc other medications. She had headaches all week leading up to the seizure.

I'm more scared than I've ever been about anything.

Has anyone ever dealt with these type things? Any recommendations/suggestions/thoughts? She's still having headaches that scare her, which in turn scares me. Migraine level stuff. She wants to wait til the doctors appointment later this week to see anyone about it. I dunno, I'm rambling and just wanted to reach out I think.

I've got nothing to offer other than the fact that I hate to hear that and hope the doctors can eliminate the clot safely and quickly.

Re: Anyone ever deal with a blood clot on the brain?

Joseph, a girl my mom is friends with had a very rare blood clot on her brain last year. She had very bad headaches that would radiate down into her neck. She spent some time in the hospital and also saw a neurologist. Docs put her on some medication (including blood thinners) and told her no exercising whatsoever other than light walking. The medication eventually worked over time, but it was a slow process and she had recurring headaches for several weeks until the clot had fully disappeared.

IIRC, she said doctors told her they suspected the clot was caused by her birth control so they told her no more birth control. No clue if that order was permanent or merely temporary. Apparently all other tests turned out normal/negative.

Definitely hope you guys get to the bottom of this and that your wife starts feeling better. Not sure when your wife's doctor appointment is, but you might want to think about trying to get in earlier.

I've got nothing to add here other than to just wish you and your wife the best of luck with this, Joseph.

Follow doctor's orders, ask questions (if for nothing else to calm your mind from wandering), stay off google, be thankful for everything.

You'll get through, so sorry to hear.

Re: Anyone ever deal with a blood clot on the brain?

I had two in my lungs about a decade ago. I waited too long to go to the hospital (typical stupidity, thought it was nothing until it was pretty clear it was something), and it ended up being close.

The seizure was a blessing in that it got her into the hospital.

Trust in the blood thinners, and trust the doctors (hard to do, I know). Sorry to hear about this.

I'm on blood thinners now because of clots in lungs and one leg. Not brain related but if you have any questions I can help with.......

Sounds exactly like what she has. I know she was out of her regular birth control when we went on vacation at the start of september and took some old pills. I'm really starting to think that might be the cause. They did tell her to stop taking them.

Glad to hear the headaches cleared up. I know it's 'just a headache' but trust me, these are intense headaches and they freak her the **** out. I feel helpless overall when she's like that. Knowing it might clear up in a couple weeks helps though.

Dom, you're definitely right about avoiding google, hard to do though.

Thanks to all for the kind words and support.

Is she doing oral blood thinners or shots?

Re: Anyone ever deal with a blood clot on the brain?

I had a minor stroke about 4-1/2 years ago. Is she going on Coumadin or one of the newer drugs? I've been on Coumadin every day since my stroke.

Feel free to PM if you have any further questions.

She's on 7.5mg of Warfarin right now, orally.

Warfarin is not as bad to manage as it's competitors commercials make it out to be, once they get your INR dialed in. Just have to be consistent with the amount of vitamin k in your diet. I was on 10 mg for probably 2 straight years and INR got consistent enough that I only got tested in the clinic once a month. This is a good website for info: http://www.ptinr.com/en/home/home-inr-monitoring.html

Re: Anyone ever deal with a blood clot on the brain?

My thoughts and prayers go out to you Joseph.

My wife had a heart attack about a year and half ago. They put a stint in to open the artery. The next day she got a clot in that stint. She went into heart stop twice before they took her to the cath lab to find out what went wrong. To make a very long story short she survived just fine. She was on blood thinners for a while but they took her off of them after about six months or so. I know this wasn't brain related but somewhat similar. Just follow doctors advice and orders. Take those meds when she supposed to. I know what you went through and how tough it is to see your wife in a life threatening situation.
