Reds defense and Gold Gloves 2017

The Gold Glove finalists should be announced soon. Reds could have up to six finalists.

Votto, Cozart, Suarez, Duvall, Hamilton, Barnhart.

Cozart might be tough this year, not predicting him. But the other five are legitimate candidates as finalists and it would be disappointing if any were omitted.

In terms of actually winning the GG awards, that will be difficult, the competition is keen and it can be hard to break through.

I’ve seen it predicted that Votto will win. That would be great, he dedicated himself to defense this year. His offense wasn’t too shabby either.

Hamilton always seems to lose out but obviously is worthy in CF. Duvall led outfielders in assists. Suarez is deserving but Arenado is becoming the perennial.

Barnhart is perhaps the most interesting. He did extremely well in defensive metrics. Molina usually has this award wrapped up and, if not, Posey (won in 2016). Surprise here?

Barnhart doesn't have a prayer and it's a crying shame.

Since there are no teams on the moon, I guess South Korea's far enough from Cincinnati to satisfy me.

    I'd bet he's at least a finalist.

Billy is as good of a center fielder the Reds have had since Cesar Geronimo. And that includes Eric Davis.

Agreed. He's better than Geronimo IMO. Maybe one year of Mike Cameron could match him, but I still think Hamilton is the better defender. I usually don't like such speed first guys as regular players, but I have no issue with Hamilton out there because I think his defense is that good. I think the Reds corner outfielders would be a lot less effective without Hamilton out there.

Neither does Hamilton. Not with this guy as competition...

Tucker Barnhart finished as the #3 qualified player in MLB in Fangraphs Def. Thatís at any position. Molina finished 10, Grandal 11 and Realmuto 12.

In the DRS rating, Barnhart finished as the #4 qualified player in MLB. Again, thatís at any position. The next highest NL catcher was the Padís Austin Hedges at #35.

Another highly rated catcher in both of these metrics was, in the American League, Martin Maldonado of the Angels. But not rated as highly as Barnhart.

How do the Reds players shake out defensively? Using the following ratings am I anywhere close?

    Elite- Hamilton, Barnhart, Suarez
Above average- Cozart, Votto, Duvall, Schebler
League average- Mesoraco, Peraza, Ervin, Senzel
    Below average- Gennett, Winker
    Horrible-

I might bump Suarez, Schebler, Winker, and maybe Votto down a level.

Kivlehan is probably average to slightly below average.

I don't think we have enough data on Turner, Ervin, or Senzel to even place them on the list.

I think you need more tiers to accurately define them. The scouting scale from 20 to 80 has 7 levels (if you go by 10s).

    Excellent - Hamilton, Barnhart
    Good - Cozart, Suarez, Duvall
    Above Average -
    Average - Peraza, Ervin
Below Average - Gennett, Schebler, Votto, Mesoraco
    Poor - Winker
    Awful -

Votto's defense is an enigma. Peraza's defense is still developing. With Ervin, it depends on which defensive position but I think anything more than average is generous. No idea on Senzel. I'll omit Kivlehan in hopes it gets us one step closer to his DFA...

So what are the odds of Gary Sanchez being a GG finalist?

    Excellent - Hamilton
    Good - Barnhart, Suarez, Cozart
Average to Above - Duvall, Votto, Peraza (at 2B)
Average to below - Mesoraco, Ervin, Schebler, Peraza (at other spots), Kivlehan
    Poor - Gennett, Winker

Considering he plays for the Yankees, I’d say higher than it should be.
The team Matheny described several times this weekend as the team he thinks the Cardinals could be, is actually the team the Reds have become.

Ugh.....is Winker's defense really that bad? He'll have to OBP .350+ to even consider playing over Duvall & Schebler. I thought Schebler was considered a good RFer.
