The game she is always changing

Grip and rip baseball be producing these sorts of numbers

    At bats to HR's

    2014 165616 4186
    2017 165567 6105

2017 was the first year that MLB had more than 6000 HR's in a season

It was also the first year that there was more than 40,000 K's

ISO--Isolated power. Is SLG minus AVG. 2017 posted the highest ISO in MLB history .171

2017 is the first season since 1968 that there were less than 1000 caught stealing, but there were only 20 teams in MLB then too.

It ain't your daddy's game, or the same game from 15 years ago

And in five or ten years, teams will figure out that speedy fleas can slap the ball past plodding fielders who are only out there because they can boom it over the fence and the game will change again. It's change is one of the best things about the game.

I love change because it gives perceptive organizations an edge in keeping ahead of teams that are spending heavily on the prevailing view of the game. There is an ebb and flow of how teams are put together that is profoundly interesting. On the other hand, I don't like changes that occur because the ball is juiced or the mound is lowered. Keep the basic framework of the game.

The 60's were tough, they always threw at you you hear... 1966 1 HBP every 160 AB's. 2017 1 HBP every 94 AB's

Those numbers are eye popping, would expect to see stuff like that in an expansion year or something.

In the last 20 years, the caught stealing rate has dropped but so have stolen base attempts (1998 was the first season that 30 teams played).

It dropped from 31.4% in 1998 to 27.0% this past season but overall attempts dropped from 4,789 to 3,461 over the same period.

Interestingly, SLG% and total Runs has stayed basically the same between '98 and '17. The weights are simply different, '17 saw: ~2,900 less singles, ~350 less doubles, and ~100 less triples, but ~1,050 more homeruns.

Do you think that could be attributed to more guys crowding the plate and more pitchers coming in and trying to throw as hard as possible rather than control it? Could lead to a situation where less players are being "thrown at" but more guys getting hit.

Also, with all the armor the hitters wear today, they might be more willing to get plunked. And the emphasis on OBP . . .

I agree. Besides a Frank Robinson a lot of players were backed off the plate or yielded the plate more.
