There's professional baseball being played in Mexico, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic from now through most of January. Australia also stars up their league in two weeks. You can watch some of it online, for free, too. There's baseball out there. You just have to work a little harder to find it and enjoy it.

Free agency starts in 8 hours.
My dad got to enjoy 3 Reds World Championships by the time he was my age. So far, I've only gotten to enjoy one. Step it up Redlegs!

Hot Stove season hopefully won't be Hell. I'd like to think Dick wants to put his stamp on this franchise with couple of organization-changing transactions and will do so before the middle of January. Granted, I also think Yvonne Strahovski (my Avatar) will come to her senses tomorrow and call professing her love. The latter is probably more likely than the former. <Sigh>

Mixed bag. There are long intermissions with no news, then days something happens and RZ goes crazy, but at least the WS is over (great as it was) and things can start rolling.

    Re: Welcome to Hell

I wouldn't characterize this time as "hell." It's a long waiting period. We feel baseball's absence, for sure.

But I live by the Rogers Hornsby quote, "People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."

As others said, free agency will start up, trades will happen and we'll dream of spring's warmth and the cry of "Play ball!"

It's just winter until pitchers and catchers report. Until then, hope springs eternal as we wait for next year.

I must say that in looking at the Astros and Dodgers teams during this series, I'm just not seeing how the Reds get to that place. Whether due to financial constraints, philosophy, or the inertia of tradition, I don't see them making the aggressive moves necessary to build a team that can win the World Series.
There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that “my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge." -- Isaac Asimov

I disagree. The Reds just need to make about 4 more trades with the Marlins that are similar to the last two that they made.

I remember one time going out to the mound to talk with Bob Gibson. He told me to get back behind the batter, that the only thing I knew about pitching was that it was hard to hit.

4 years ago people were literally calling for the contraction of the Houston Astros.

    Re: Welcome to Hell

    Here's a big question:

Will this be the most boring offseason ever? It may be even more boring than the offseason that we signed John Vanderwall.
The only marketable veteran they have to trade is Inglesis, and I doubt they do it.
The Reds seem committed (right or wrong) to keeping all the young pitching they have, and throwing it against the wall and seeing what sticks.
Willliams has already said <paraphrased> there is no money to replace Feldman and Storen.. does not seem likely he will get a vet to help stabilize the rotation.

I guess the only excitement will be if they can wait out Cozart until January and get him to sign a club friendly deal ZZZZZZ.

    Re: Welcome to Hell

It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.

The offseason can be awesome ... if teams are active. Hopefully GMs are looking over at their NBA brethren and looking to mimic what they see there.
Wait until the year after next year.
