General managers and baseball operations executives from all 30 teams are just beginning the wheeling and dealing that will help shape the rosters for the 2018 season and beyond, as clubs try to get to the autumn stage where the Astros and Dodgers just played.

Starting Monday at 5 p.m. ET, free agents are allowed to sign with new clubs, and that is when the real intrigue starts. More than 100 players will be eligible to sign with any team, and there are plenty of big names potentially available.

Tanaka won't opt out of his contract with the Yankees. I saw it on the scroll on ESPN yesterday.

Here is a position-by-position look at some of the most intriguing players available, listed with their "seasonal age" for next year, which means their age as of July 1, 2018:

The Dodgers declined a $17.5 million option for Andre Ethier for 2018 and paid a $2.5 million buyout to make the senior member of the club a free agent Sunday.

I think that's interesting. Earlier this year it was almost a given the Bucs were not going to pick up that option due to his age and salary. But he rallied after a slow first couple of months and hit like he usually does.

JD Martinez looking for a $200 million deal.

I like everything about JD as far as his offensive ability but at age 30 that's a big contract to carry for any team for a player into his mid-late 30s.

MLB teams that have inquired on FA outfielder Jay Bruce say he’s seeking a deal for 5 years in the $80-90 million range.
The only way I see a five year deal happening at that price point is if the team holds options on years 2-5 otherwise my odds of getting a 4 year deal to be a starting pitcher for the Reds have to be about the same as Bruce landing 5.

Bruce is only 30, so that helps his chances of getting a multyear deal.
He is coming off a good year, but honestly, I think his lack of consistency is really going to hurt him.
The Indians basically gave nothing to acquire him from the Mets.. IMO, that is a pretty good indication of his market value (pretty low).

Like you say.. it seems like Bruce would get 2-3 years at most. If I were a GM, I would rather pay a premium to get him on a one year deal.
I am not accusing him of not being motivated, but it is possible he just got too comfortable with his cold streaks until his contract year..
