    Reds Sign Kevin Quackenbush

1st rate name, solid peripherals early in his career, struggled mightily last season.

Minor league invite to Spring Training.

    Better than Tim Adleman, surely.

I will be disappointed if he doesn't look like Groucho Marx.

Minor league contract, not much too complain about. Only throws about 90 but is deceptive and he can get some guys out. All in all a pretty standard minor league free agent pitcher.

I thought he had a little more success than he actually has, but I think I was thinking of Nick Vincent.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

Can’t wait until Price anoints him the Reds set up guy, after watching him throw long toss on the first day of spring training.

I fully admit that I pay little attention to the Padres. Half of the games the Reds play against them start too late for me to watch much of (when I was young, this wasn't a problem), so Quackenbush is little more than a name to me.

He was really successful in 2014-2015, lost the strikeouts in 2016, and then really fell apart with poor control in 2017. He's only lost 1 mph of fastball velocity since his heyday but now that pitch is getting clobbered. Either the league figured him out, or he can't locate it like he used to. Lets hope it's the latter and the Reds coaching staff can help straighten him out...

They changed the way they calculated velocity last year, so that everyone’s velocity rose around 2 MPH. If Quckenbush lost 1 MPH last year, I’m guessing it means he really lost around 3 mph.

It's odd because he did not really lose velocity between 2015 and 2016, but his strikeouts decreased at a very significant clip. If he can re-gain what made him solid in 2014 and 2015, he can pitch himself into high leverage situations in Cincinnati.

I'm pretty sure I saw a video earlier today of Kevin Quackenbush giving up a HR to Zack Vincej in Spring Training. Weird.

It looks like he introduced a slider last year after his fastball stopped missing bats in 2016. That very much did not work for him.

Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

I remember an old pitcher saying, “I throw as hard as I ever did, but the ball doesn’t go as fast.” Maybe this is the opposite. He’s lost strength, and to get the ball to go as fast, he has to fling it without the extra strength to command it.

    In other words, “uneasy gas.”
