    Kentucky Wildcats 2017-2018 Basketball Thread

With fall national signing day coming up tomorrow, hereís my prediction for Kentuckyís class:

    PG-Immanuel Quickley
    SG-Tyler Herro
    SG-Keldon Johnson
    SF-Zion Williamson
    C-Moses Brown

Keldon Johnson could go elsewhere if RJ Barrett shocks the world aka Kevin Knox and goes against Duke and picks the Cats but Iím not betting on it.

The class will still be solid but will pair with returnees from this class for a team that could heavily compete the following season for number nine.

As for this year, Kentucky starts the season against the Fighting Mark Popes of Utah Valley State. I am hoping Wenyen Gabriel can carry this team early on. The progress of Hami Diallo and Kevin Knox will be huge as the season progresses.

The PG situation will be fascinating as Quade Green is essentially the Tyler Ulis of this class but Shai Alexander has really impressed and could give Cal a Tyreke Evans combo guard running the point.

This is awfully young team. Even more so this season than just about any Cal has been at UK. They do have a lot of talent. Very long and in the exhibition games they appear to be better shooters than expected. But this team is going to to take some licks. I dread the Kansas game, they could get really drubbed. This team isn't anywhere near ready for a team like that. This is a lot like the 13-14 team. It's going to take awhile for things to come together. It may not be until March that we see it either. I expect 9 or 10 losses, maybe more with the SEC being better this year than any recent season. I just hope they can get enough quality wins to get a decent seed in the NCAA's and then we will see what happens.

Iíve said all along this is a bridge year. My expectations are low for this season but higher for next. Just depends on how recruiting plays out.

It helps though that as an overall draft class this one is pretty weak. I know they are second to Duke but Iím talking in terms of class strength there are no superstars. Diallo, Knox, and maybe Richards are gone from this years team and truth be told a second season wouldnít hurt them.

If Vanderbilt can come back full strength, this could be a really tough out in the tournament.

Until then, they'll struggle. Smart, semi-athletic teams will tear them up. Good shooters are going to be an issue until the young guys realize what they need to do defensively. Right now, they're just so unsound. It's all athleticism. Eventually, the UK coaching staff will get them right (or not).

I like Richards' upside as a shot-blocker and as a focal point offensively. He's got a nice, feathery jumper and can hit the 15-footer. Knox will be tough to guard. Greene's got a nice stroke. Everyone else is pretty one-dimensional, and one-dimensional players are predictable. This can result in a poor offense.

Calipari will need to run more plays, IMO, than he has in years. Expect lots of motion offensively. Were I coaching, I'd run a ton of back picks and look for lobs at the hoop. (That was effective for a couple of years early in his tenure at Kentucky, then opposing coaches wised up. Might have to dust off a couple of those.)

Might also see some PG-heavy pick and roll/pop with Knox. If Washington's posting underneath, I'd play a little three-man game. One issue I don't hear from anyone in the know is how turn over prone this squad might be. I question the handles on everyone but Greene-- especially Diallo, Gabriel, and Gregorious. Perhaps their athleticism can pull them through.

BTW, these are the types of teams that are painful to watch, IMO. Remind me of early 90's Big East teams-- long but flawed. Look great one minute, lost the next. They can't be much fun to coach, I'd imagine.

This is going to be painful.

Kentucky wins 73-63 after being down 9 at the half.

Kentucky looked great in the zone but Cal will not commit to it.

A lot of growing up to do. Not looking forward to Tuesday night, and they could even get knocked off by Vermont on Sunday.

Fair to say that K has now surpassed Cal in one-and-done recruiting? Crazy how loaded Duke's last few classes have been.

Yes but three things to note:

    1. Duke hasnít been as successful since adopting the one and done. For whatever reason, Ks teams since going to the one and done have had a lot more chemistry issues than Kentuckyís. Credit Cal for getting the right type of players.

    2. The Duke one and dones have not been as successful in the NBA, sans Kyrie Irving.

    3. Duke is pretty much done with recruiting now. They have an impressive class with Tre Jones, Cam Reddish, and Barrett, but Keldon Johnson is expected to commit to Kentucky tonight. Zion Williamson, Tyler Herro, and Moses Brown most likely will push this class ahead of Duke.

Itís funny to watch though how Cal is vilified for the one and done approach and even the pro day but K is lauded as a trailblazer for it.

I haven't watched the Kansas game yet but I was encouraged by the score. I really thought Kansas would blow them out. Sounded like UK had multiple chances to roll over and die but didn't. They came close to pulling it out. You have to like the determination and hopefully the other things will come together by March.

As much as I hate to say this after last night, itís Duke and everybody else.

They have the best mix of youth and experience. Duval gives them a real PG and allows Allen to play off the ball. Add in Bagley and they have a chance to do what the 2015 Kentucky team couldnít.

I thought it was going to head to a blowout but was glad to see they kept it close. That said, Kansas has some issues of their own.

I did watch most of the Duke game. Yes, Duke is really good. They won't lose over 3 games this season, if that. Also brace for Grayson Allen to be Player of the Year. If he keeps his head on straight all season he will be one of if not the best player in the country. Scoring 37 against Michigan State was very impressive.

They're not going undefeated playing in the ACC, but they're pretty stout for sure.

Probably not, but it would be UNC, Miami, or maybe Louisville (depending on how Padgett does).

That said, this is one of the deepest, talented Duke teams Iíve seen in awhile.
