    Positon by Position Central comparison

Compared by position, my subjective opinion of player rankings in the central taking OPS+, WAR, fWAR, various defensive rankings, age into account, then grouping them, not 1 through 5 but in tiers.

So, some positions may have 3 tiers, some may have only 1(LF) or or as many as 4.

At first base for instance I see Votto as clearly the class of that position but Rizzo, a notch below, is close but still a tier below Joey's HoF numbers. Carpenter has slipped a bit and Bell is young and coming up so I tiered them together (although the order in which I listed them is how I would rank them 1 to 5, just that I don't see enough difference to put them in a different tier from each other. Finally, Thames had a good year but I strongly suspect his weak 2nd half is closer to what he'll hit than his hot first half. He'd be my clear last choice among central 1st basemen.

At catcher, Molina was the class of the division but he showed some slippage and that trend will likely continue. Right now I'll take Contreras or Barnhart over Javier. Pina and Cervelli are well off the top three's game.

In LF, Its my opinion there isn't a big difference in any of the players although Schwarber has the highest ceiling, he hasn't tapped into it yet and has some holes in his game. Braun is getting older and may be the weakest defender of the group, Pham may be the best of the lot based on last year but he doesn't have a track record that says he can continue to hit like this. Duvall's power and good defense keep him in the tier but he may be the weakest link. Marte had the most disappointing season overall but his talent keeps him the same conversation with the others.

    C - #1 Cubs(Contreras) & Reds(Barnhart) - #2 Cards(Molina) - #3 Brewers(Pina) & Pirates(Cervelli)

    1B - #1 Reds(Votto) - #2 Cubs(Rizzo) - #3 Cards(Carpenter) & Pirates(Bell) - #4 Brewers(Thames)

    2B - #1 Cubs(Baez) - #2 Pirates(Harrison), Cards(Wong) & Reds(Gennett) - #3 Brewers(Villar)

    SS - #1 Cubs(Russell), - #2Cards(DeJong) & Brewers(Arcia) - #3 Pirates(Mercer ) - #4Reds(Peraza )

    3B - #1 Cubs(Bryant) - #2 Reds(Suarez) - #3 Brewers(Shaw) & Cards(Gyorko) - #4 Pirates(Freese)

    LF - #1 Cubs(Schwarber), Cards (Pham), Brewers(Braun), Pirates(Marte), Reds (Duvall),

    CF - #1 Pirates(McCutcheon) - #2Cubs(Almora) & Cards(Fowler) - #3Reds(Hamilton) - #4 Brewers(Broxton)

    RF - #1 Brewers(Santana) - #2 Cubs(Heyward) - #3 Cards(Piscotty) & Reds(Schebler) - #4 Pirates(Polanco)

    Cubs 11, Reds 17, Cards 17, Brewers 21, Pirates 21

Just a boredom exercise and the Cubs (low total wins) run away with it (no surprise there). The Reds look like they could compete, at least for a wild card......ooops - I didn't include pitchers or bench. That ought to be a much more gloomy analysis and changes the whole wildcard thing. Oh well, always 2019....

99% of all numbers only tell 33% of the story so when looking at the numbers remember that numbers is plural...

I think your analysis points out what we already knew - it's not the Reds regular 8 that is the problem.

Contreras is a much better hitter than Barnhart and the difference isn't made up in defense. They should be separate tiers.

Tommy Pham had a monster season. It was BABIP-fueled, but his strong defense and base running should keep him a tier above Schwarber. Based on historical performance, I'd say the same for Starling Marte.

Domingo Santana had BABIP help too. I'd put him in a top tier with Gregory Polanco, who was worth a consistent 2 wins per season before his injury-plagued 2017. The other three players are probably in the same tier behind them...

My only suggestion would be to have 5 tiers but not assign a first tier in all instances. Probably Votto and Bryant would be the only tier 1 guys in the division. Having Votto and the LFs on the same level is similar to the discussion of an Ace vs a "#1" starter.
