Can the Reds get Shohei Ohtani

With Shohei Ohtani getting posted and the Reds upper brass already out scouting him could the Reds shock the world and sign him? I know they have a snowballs chance in hell of getting him but if they offered him the chance to hit and pitch it could entice him to be a Redleg. I would like to see him as a super utility type player who can play multiple positions and pitch every 5th day. I just got a crazy thought, what if he went 12-8 3.50 era 170 ip 150 k .280 ba .330 obp 20 hr 70 rbi would that win the MVP? I would have to think it would be. Maybe the thought of that would persuade him enough to want to play here.

    Let the kids play!

All they can do is prepare their best pitch and wow him. The pitch essentially has to be “We want you to be the face of our franchise so you let us know what it will take to make you happy for your 6 years as a Red. We will do it.”

What stops the Reds from paying some other player represented by the same agency well over market value? I know it's gotta be again the rules or something but with the weak penalties teams have been getting for breaking various rules it seems like it would be worth it.

Getting caught is what stops them. If you are caught doing that, you're going to have him removed from your team and declared a free agent.

Kroger's sushi selection could be a strong incentive for him to sign with the Reds.

The MVP question above is an interesting one.

For discussions sake if in a season he is a 3.5 WAR pitcher and 3.5 WAR hitter (just go with it...now that’s good, not great for each subset). The next best guy is a 6.0 WAR pitcher or hitter.

Is Othani the most valuable? Hard to say he’s not, despite not excelling in either aspect.

Re: Can the Reds get Shohei Ohtani

The problem with the Reds offering to let him play in the field is that he has done very little of that the past few years as his time as a hitter has been as a DH. Time in field has been in LF IIRC.

    Edit: https://www.baseball-reference.com/r...d=otani-000sho
Other than pitching, he last played in the field in 2014 when he appeared in 8 games in the OF, mostly in RF. He played in the OF in 54 games in 2013, mostly in RF. He certainly has the arm for RF but how the rest of his defensive game plays...

    Another edit:
    http://m.mlb.com/news/article/254954...shohei-ohtani/
The first scouting director said he'd put Ohtani's raw power among the best of any player at any level currently and also had recorded home-to-first times at 3.9 seconds, which is well above average and a part of his game not often discussed.

Say they don't get caught until after the fact, and he has already played games for the Reds, do you still think he is declared a FA?

What’s in it for Ohtani in this case? He’s the one calling the shots.

It's funny because he's from Japan?

    100%, yes.

The theory, it would seem, is that the "extra money" paid to the other guy is actually just funneled to Ohtani.

I was more making fun of Kroger. Sorry; disgruntled (way) former employee here.

I don’t understand why this keeps being brought up. Isn’t it (basically) impossible because the reds can only give him $300,000?
What would you say.....ya do here?

Well he would obviously be getting a kick back. It's far-fetched but about the only way in heck the Reds have a chance is to pull something shady.

Eh. No one can offer him the kind of money that matters. It's going to be about selling him on the idea that you are the best place for him to play. The Rangers reportedly have the most money remaining to offer him, and it's not even $4M. You've got to find a way to sell him on something far beyond money.
