I was graduating college* a few months after Richard Ramirez 'the Night Stalker' was captured in the same city/area where he was doing his thing. My parents and aunts and uncles were all nearby where it was happening so I heard a lot about it as a college student*.
Bill James is into reading and writing about this stuff (popular crime) and about 6 -7 years ago when talking about Jon Benet Ramsey he reported that he thought the crime would be solved this way (through an Ancestry.com kind of site). I didn't know terribly much about how that all worked then and it struck me strange - i was unaware of how that could occur. Fascinating.
