Reds Instructional Roster Released - Senzel is an Outfielder

    https://www.baseballamerica.com/stor...league-roster/

(this is behind paywall but at least for me, let me in because I hadn't read more than 5 stories)

While others are specifically listed as CF, RF, LF, Senzel is listed as OF. I assume that means he will play all 3.

Senzel as CF solves a lot of issues, and would give an inventive manager the ability to use Billy (if he is a Red) as the supersub base stealer/defensive specialist. Or just plug Senzel in if Billy is gone (over Bob's dead body).

Even if Senzel is only a corner outfielder, Reds would have a lot of options in Schebler, Ervin, and Williams in CF.
The lowest acceptable payroll amount for ownership to show they are not greedy pigs is 15 million more than they are currently paying. No matter what that currently is.

Schebler, Ervin or Williams as starting CF? I think a new guy in a trade or stop gap FA more likely. They won’t even give Ervin any CF time these days.

We'll mark this thread for future reference !!

A couple guys (like Senzel) are 23. Everyone else is younger. Except 26 year old Carlos Diaz. Pitcher with Daytona. Has pitched VERY few innings between signing in 2012 (Indians) and now. Missed 3 straight years. Gotto be a story there. When he has pitched he's been pretty good.

I've also got the roster posted, along with some other notes for the league. Spent too much time procrastinating to beat BA to the instructs roster punch this year. I messed up.

This is meant as a legit question(not a snarky comment implying the Reds don't know wtf they are doing). What is the advantage of having Senzel in the Instructional League as opposed to swapping him out with one of the guys that will play in the AFL? Personally I thought they'd put him in the AFL to raise the bar as far as the level of competition, but I don't doubt that there may well be lots of advantages in the Instructional League.

I'm thinking that Instructional League is a place where Senzel can receive instruction in ANY position they put him in, without the pressure of AZL rosters where every team wants their guy played. It's also interesting that India also is in Instructional League. Most likely, he will get some instruction in another position or two.

Agree. Also, Nick is coming back from injury absences. I'd rather he stay in-house this off-season where they can be super cautious about his recovery/health.

I still wonder if he might make an appearance in Az Fall League. My guess he gets a ton more "instruction/work" in Instructional League than in AFL.

Some guys do both. The AFL doesn't start for a month. Instructs starts Monday (they report on Sunday). The Reds have said that Senzel to the AFL could still be possible, but he has to overcome some hurdles before they're willing to make that decision. That's what was said when the AFL rosters came out. My guess is that the next 2-3 weeks in instructs will determine if he replaces someone in the AFL. Is his finger ready to hit 96 MPH fastballs? Instructs end October 13th. The AFL doesn't begin until October 9th. There's time to do both if that's the route they want to take. Getting Senzel on the field in instructs, especially if they are looking at outfield time, is great. He can get individual instruction there for several weeks before the AFL starts. If they like how things are going, they can swap him out for someone else in the AFL.
