For the record, the highest payrol for the Reds was $118M back in 2015.

Even so, that'd be roughly a $20 million payroll increase.

It’s probably going to be sign Harvey and extend Scooter.

I will then drown myself in malted hops and bong resin in despair.

Very hollow statement. Inflation alone would probably do that. Anyway if it is the highest will they be good judgement signings?

Yes. And I would say that is encouraging news. That is the bare minimum the Reds payroll needs to be at to even consider contending.

This statement has me optimistic about next year.

For the record, an extension for Scooter will not affect the payroll that much. He’s already due to make a substantial amount in arbitration for this year.,

Color me very unimpressed, even somewhat concerned by those statements. I feel if they had a plan to do anything dramatic we would hear more than a well placed PR statement. Sure, highest payroll ever sounds impressive to a wide chunk of Reds fans, but when you look deeper and realize it is only a $20M increase over last season, and that $118M number with salary inflation should be more like $150M in 2019, it is a pretty empty statement geared at impressing the uninformed.

The Reds are currently estimated at about $100M as it stands for 2019.

FWIW, the avg MLB payroll this year was around 139 mil. The median was around 140.

    Yeah, this means nothing.

If you truly are going to increase payroll significantly, you don’t release a statement with your intention to do so. You just do it.

This organization is a complete clown show right now.

We agree overall. I have argued that the Reds should get to around $150M payroll if they are serious about contending.

But $120M is much better than I was expecting, and enough to at least them get on the track towards contending.

No, but you could get more flexibility By not putting money toward a position that can be filled with your #1 prospect at league minimum. I love what Scooter has done but it’s an huge overpay for the position.

If they are that serious, then put Winker in left and take the millions in Hamilton/Gennett savings into a bonafide CF or RF, and use the increase to bolster SP.

Winker, Suarez, Peraza, Senzel, Votto, and Barnhart. Get Adam Jones or Markakis until Trammell is ready.

That will never happen. We're stuck with Hamilton. Bob will keep throwing good money at bad players and/or bad contracts looks like.
