Glad they're going to go out and get pitching. They did a nice job last winter with relievers -- fairly confident they can get a decent starter, even if it's a bit of an overpay.

Yes, this is the point in the rebuild (depending on when we think it started) where the “going for it” should kick in. I’m happy to hear them sounding like they’re following through, rather than hemming and hawing about needing more time.

If the litmus test that triggers spending is “getting close enough,” then the Reds have mis-timed this spree.

    This is correct.

But what makes this year different from previous years? Is the team really that much better or closer to contending than it was one or two years ago?
The team Matheny described several times this weekend as the team he thinks the Cardinals could be, is actually the team the Reds have become.

It's different, but not in the good way. It's now abundantly clear the in-house options aren't going to carry the weight anytime soon.

I think "getting close enough" means that ownership got dividends and nice financial rewards from tanking.
Now attendance has gotten low enough where they are compelled to reluctantly take action.
The success/failure of the rebuilding process has nothing to do with it.
Last winter, Williams said the Reds were not close enough, but they probably would be close enough next year (ie now).
Well, the team did not improve, in fact, due to youngsters washing out, the rebuild looks like an even bigger disaster, IMO.

You realize the Reds didn't really gut payroll during their "rebuild" like a lot of teams do, right? I don't really buy the narrative they got some nice financial reward from tanking compared to if they attempted to stay the course after 2015.
