Alford made 3 Sweet 16s in his short time there. Think Mick will top that?

Same answer as above. Cronin will not have any aggressively awful teams like Alford did.

Is that how he'll be judged? By how many teams missed the tournament? No, that's how UC judges its coaches. There's a much higher bar at UCLA. They won't tolerate one Sweet 16 in 13 yrs even if he reached the tournament again and again. Also how's Mick going to do recruiting out there? His connections are in the midwest and east coast.

That's generally what got the other guys fired. Having some miserable, awful teams. And Cronin will hire assistants with west coast connections. And he's got UCLA to sell, so I'm sure he'll be able to field teams at LEAST as talented as his UC teams.

Being better than Alford is not the standard I'd set to judge whether this is a good hire. I've seen nothing that Mick's style will play well in the tournament or even at a Power 5 school.

Oh, I didn't say it was a good hire. Just that he'd do fine and is an upgrade for UCLA. UCLA's chances of making a "good" hire went out the window once they publicly flirted with Calipari, Dixon and Barnes. All the "good" hire candidates weren't going to be okay being the #4 (at best) choice. Cronin was clearly looking to get out of town, so the process worked out perfectly for him. And I think it will be "fine" for UCLA. He won't do a bad job there.

OK. I guess it comes down to what the definition of fine is. I like Mick and I wish him the best. Three Sweet 16s in 5 yrs is what he has to do to match Alford. That seems daunting given his history

So, Bol Bol says he's coming back and then he says he's entering the draft. Was that a good decision?

Alford's problem was he squandered away good/great recruiting classes. Mick will win at UCLA, but winning enough is the story.
...and this one belongs to the Reds.

Alford won at UCLA too, hence the several Sweet 16s

WSJ lists Dayton as the 18th most valuable college basketball program in America. Did not see that coming! Xavier is #38 and UC #76.

Around the region: UK #1, Louisville #3, IU #5, Purdue #12, Ohio State #13

It has to do with money generated by the basketball program. I would imagine with the 1st Four games being held there, that would be quite a bit of money.

I don't think the First Four would swing it that much (if at all). That's pretty much a loss leader to be honest.

But that was viewed as under achieving in Westwood. Honestly Steve has won everywhere he has been. He has close to 600 career wins.

Steve coached up an unwatchable team this year. That should never happen at UCLA. But you make a great point about the standards in Westwood.
