I thought about making that joke and then realized that this season the Reds may actually have what resembles a major league pitching staff. We're just so jaded that it's almost reactionary to think otherwise.

Re: Who Will Be On The Coaching Staff?

KoryMac5 posted this on the Reds "no discussion" thread. Posting it here so it can be discussed.

Reds added Rolando Valles to the coaching staff...Valles spent several seasons with Milwaukee working as a pitching coach and Latin player liason. Per the Reds twitter page.

Any idea what position he'll be?

Here's a blurb from the Ironton Tribune - looks like the Reds press release

Will this break a record for the amount of coaches on one MLB staff? Almost as many coaches as players.

Didn't there used to be a rule about the number of coaches a club could have, or am I just imagining that? (I thought it used to be something like six or seven, including the manager.)

A Wikipedia article states that in 2007, MLB limited the number of uniformed coaches to six, then added one more with the assistant hitting coach/translator in 2013. I'll be honest though, but I couldn't find that codified in MLB's rules. Plus, I don't think our translator is uniformed. I got the sense that it was this number on the dugout bench. Not sure if that limit includes the uniformed coaches in the bullpen. I can say for sure, you didn't imagine it. We'll leave that to other matters... :-)

I've never heard of an associate coach in MLB. That's a new one on me.

I know. The only thing I'm seeing is a couple of small papers reporting on it basically using the Reds' press release language.

Is an associate coach higher or lower on the totem pole when compared to an assistant coach?

(Much like college, where you had professors, associate professors, and assistant professors.)

Re: Who Will Be On The Coaching Staff?

For a team that should hopefully have an influx of young, inexperienced players over the next few seasons, I think this is great.

It is also a divergence from our past expectations of the Reds. It was always other clubs we looked to who were at the forefront of analytics, coaching, scouting, and general preparedness.
The Reds used to be the ones who took a bare bones approach to everything.
(Referring to Jack Hannahan signing with a Korean team)
Since there are no teams on the moon, I guess South Korea's far enough from Cincinnati to satisfy me.
