#STLCards close on an extension with 1B Paul Goldschmidt, sources tell The Athletic. Deal will be for at least five years and at least $110M.
Well, shows what I know. Obviously the market has shifted but I think Goldschmidt was gonna get more than that unless he completely fell apart in 2019.

Paul Goldschmidt and #cardinals closing in on five-year extension worth around $130 million, according to source. @Ken_Rosenthal had sides were close.
Apparently this is in addition to his current year left.

To be finalized by Saturday, pending physical. Added to this year, when Goldschmidt will make $15.5 million. #cardinals
    So 6 for 145. (That's Wily Taveras-esque)

The extension is for his years age 33-38. Not sure Cards fans should be so thrilled with this.

I'm guessing the Cardinals are thinking their special patented age regressing ways will work for Goldie - when their last 1b left for the West Coast he seemed to age ten years.
    Where we gonna go?

Don't get mad at the Cardinals for signing Paul Goldschmidt to an extension. Get even by signing Yasiel Puig to an extension.

    8-10/$150M

He said he doesn't care how many years if they reach his total price. I think that could be as high as $150M. But if it's less...

Yah, they have to extend him.

I'm thinking it's going to be higher than 150. Not Trout or Harper or Machado high but inbetween. 8 years, $250 is my guess about what it will take (or will be a starting point for Puig to negotiate from).

He's not that good. He's been a high 700/low 800 OPS batter since his surprise Rookie year. He's also been injury prone.

Votto is signed through age 39 (plus an option). Everybody needs one.

You mean a big contract for an aging veteran with declining skills?

I love Votto, but really wish his contract ended last year. I also see Goldschmidt skills deteriorating faster than Votto’s. His K/BB rate already is slipping.

Puig is pretty good but he's about half as valuable as Goldschmidt.

Puig isn't getting $250M from anyone. The team that could have afforded that traded him for the ghost of Homer Bailey.
