This is a ridiculous statement. Buxton does nothing better than Votto outside of strike out and steal bases. Furthermore nobody cares about "talent" if what you mean is pure athletic ability; slow or unathletic players get drafted in the first half of every year's MLB draft because they are evaluated to have the skillset to succeed in higher levels of baseball.

If you mean literal talent, then maybe Buxton is better at things like playing the harmonica or riding a unicycle or doing magic tricks than Votto, I don't know. I guess I'll concede that point.

I'm not even sure what you're arguing at this point.

    Talent is natural ability,

    Skill is learned ability.

It’s a rather simple and universally accepted point.

Based on that I say they didn’t have similar years. You disagree but that’s how I show my work on that opinion.
I was only comparing their AA stints.

None of that matters at all in the scheme of players being good at baseball.

I agree. Which is is why I compared Buxton to Votto.

I was just demonstrating that the best player in baseball may not be the most talented.

So if Mike Trout isn't the most talented player in baseball, who is?
The television crews left and about 10 reporters remained in the room. That's when Price took his turn doing the talking.
What followed was a five-minute, 34-second expletive-filled tirade. The final tally was 77 uses of the "F" word or a variant and 11 uses of a vulgar term for feces (two bovine, one equine).

    I don’t know, I’m not a scout.

But my guess is Bryce Harper. And the fact that he has been about half as productive as Trout, with more talent, demonstrates the difference between talent and skill.

Brian Buxton. Who literally has never played an inning of professional baseball.

Well, Dustin Ackley was drafted 2nd overall in the 2009 draft. So, he was the most talented position player in that draft.

Teams don’t always draft who they think is the most talented player available. Example: Mike Leake.

Being able to learn and apply different skills on the diamond is a talent in itself, so my vote would be Mike Trout.

I'm actually with you, on this overall point here, and how it pertains to Friedl.

I find the overall Friedl discussion that M2 has led actually quite interesting. Friedl wasnt really on my radar as an undervalued commodity, as I had some concerns over his power and him being 23, but I do think in theory, that a player who does a lot of things reasonably well, and nothing really badly is more likely to naturally improve in one area than fix a black hole problem area (like contact issues for a talented guy like Isabel).

Friedl is a ball player through and through... and the performance at every level is really strong. Aren't these the types of guys the Rays and A's seem to grab at the right time, and turn into starting players for pennies on the dollar?

I'm coming around to the idea of him being a pretty undervalued commodity that gives a lot more than his tools would suggest he should. Compared to toolsy kids, where the long term upside may not be as drastic as it appears, with the probability edge, I'm seeing Friedl in a much more positive light than those gasping at the idea of him as the #4 guy.

That’s an interesting take. So you’re saying some people are born being able to learn and apply skills better than other people?

Right, because nobody cares about talent in any draft outside of maybe the NBA - they care about players being good at baseball and having skillsets that could produce at the MLB level. This is a pedantic argument that has nothing to do with anything regarding player evaluation or capability in baseball.
