    Concert Poster Art 1980s 1990s

Through collecting some grunge items, Ive become drawn to some of the concert flyer artwork of the Pacific Northwest.

Ive been talking with one of the authors of a book called Maximum Plunder, which examines the artwork of Mike King.

Most of these artists used an exacto knife to cut up publicly available images and then pasted them to a master copy along with band names.

Weirdly, it turned into art. I love seeing these bands that led to the grunge scene- you can follow it from The Wipers of the early 1980s, all the way through Nirvana. They did posters for other bands, of course, but it is a medium where you can trace the grunge movement pretty well.

The names of some of these old bars (some are still there) are very cool. I'll post some examples later, but here are a few:

This band had "macaroni cheese bakeoffs" where the extras went to a food bank.

One of my favorite bands is The Gits, whose singer, Mia Zapata, was murdered in Seattle early one morning on her way home from a bar. They couldnt find her killer for years, and many rock stars threw benefits to pay a PI to stay on the case.

Here are some Gits flyers with one benefit Joan Jett did.

Not too often- to get them you literally had to take them off telephone poles or club walls (before the weather got them).

There are some flyers where 2-3 are even known to exist.

Also- the problem becomes if you dont know what to look for (offset printing) you can easily buy a photocopy.

Though right now on ebay, the co-author of the book has a hundred or so for sale, all different. It's the first time this many have been up for sale, and he wont have them up long.

He put up some early Pearl Jam and they sold in minutes. The Nirvana ones go for several thousand dollars.

Most of the ones he has now are under $100, even some under $50.

One of Joan Jett's first stops through Seattle and Portland.

The WREX was known for an inch of beer on the floor- sounds like a hoot. I think this may be 1980.

This is great- For a Fugazi show in 1999- Mike King submitted this and it was rejected, because the promoter thought it too war-like (lol)..

So no copies were made. This is the only one in the world.

J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr- this style of poster was popular where the artist would use artwork from cheesey sci-fi or romance novels and incorporate band names and show dates. Terrific.

This is not an original, but a very famous poster for a show at The Central Tavern.

If you ever go to Seattle, this place is old and perfect and the bathrooms have graffiti on the walls to the point where it's on every square inch, multiple times over. If I can get some photos Ill post.
