    2018/2019 Prospect Poll - Prospect #7

Tyler Stephenson won convincingly as our #6 prospect. I've added Mariel Bautista, Mike Siani, and Jimmy Herget. Remember, you can "add" anyone you want just by voting for them.

Mariel Bautista (21) - CF from Dominican Republic. Signed as Intl Free Agent in 2014. Hit .330 with .917 OPS in Billings.
Jeter Downs (20) - SS/2b from Pace HS, Miami Gardens FL. Drafted in CB Round of 2017 Draft (#32 overall) .257/.351/.402 in Low-A with 23 doubles, 13 homers, 37 steals, 52 walks,
T.J. Freidl (23) OF from Univ of Nevada - Signed as Undrafted Free Agent in 2016. Split 2018 between High and AA. AA was .276 .359 OBP, .719 OPS. 30 steal overall.
Josiah Gray - (21) 2nd round pick in 2018 out of LeMoyne College. 2.58 ERA in 12 starts. Whip of .088 in Greeneville
Vladimir Gutierrez (23), RHP, Cuban, signed in 2016, posted 4.35 ERA with 145/38 K/BB in 147 innings in Double-A
Jimmy Herget (25) - RHP from Tampa, FL. Drafted in 6th round of 2015 draft. 3.47 ERA in AAA. Added to 40 man roster.
Shed Long (23) - 2b from Jacksonville (AL.) HS. Drafted 12th round of 2013 draft. .765 OPS in AA with 19 steals.
Mike Siani (19) - CF from William Penn HS, Pennsylvania. Drafted 4th round of 2018 draft for $2 Million bonus. Hit .281 with .351 OBP in Greeneville.
Jose Siri (23) - OF from Dominican Republic. Signed in 2012 as International Free Agent in 2012. Bonus Unknown to me. .743 OPS over 2 levels in 2018. 23 steals
The lowest acceptable payroll amount for ownership to show they are not greedy pigs is 15 million more than they are currently paying. No matter what that currently is.

Gray again for me. Total domination of a level he was old for. Can't wait to see what he does this coming year in Dayton.

Voted Friedl. High floor, and I suspect his ceiling may be higher that many people think.

Was Gray really too old? He was 20. Technically he's still 20. Turns 21 in a few days.

Maybe I spoke too soon. B-R says Gray was 0.7 years younger than the average pitcher in that league. Even more spectacular, his performance, then.

Yeah I think now is where he should be getting serious votes. He’s got a higher floor than most guys on this list based on his glove and speed alone, to say nothing of the ceiling.
I dont care, Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. Hes in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.

In Jose Siri's monster 2017, he had a 140 wRC+ in Dayton. T.J. Friedl had 141 wRC+ for the same team. Siri's never done anything else like it at another level. Friedl's bookended it with two seasons exactly like it. They're the same age.

I went Friedl for the speed. At this point, it gets harder to predict.

Friedl's power has plummeted since Dayton. He slugged .360 at Pensacola last year, compared to .474 for Siri.

Friedl's wRC+ in Daytona this year was 141, exact same as it was in Dayton the year before. The FSL chops down power (Friedl had a higher SLG in A+ this season than Siri), but Friedl actually did all right in that regard. His power didn't disappear. He just played in a league that masks it.

Siri had more power in AA, but power is the trailing skill for Friedl. He doesn't need much of it to be a really good player. He carried everything forward to AA. It's just a matter of a modest amount of power showing up this season. Siri's troubles finding 1B may be a fatal flaw. That's not something you grow into.

I think he needs more of it to be more than a platoon/tweener type, which is a floor that I think Siri is already nearly at.

You could ultimately be right about Friedl, he might end up being the better player, but I skew towards the pure ability guys rather than the over achievers.

Siri can't get on base. His floor is out machine. I find him intriguing, but he needs to jump off the Aristedes Aquino career path. Friedl needs more power, but he's a 5-10 HR guy who needs to become a 10-15 HR guy. Not much of a jump. He does that and he's golden.

How is being able to hit and get on base overachieving? It's the most fundamental skill you need to succeed in baseball.

This is a guy who rode the bench at baseball powerhouse Nevada - Reno, I don't think it's wrong to call him an overachiever to this point. Bunting helps pad out his hitting numbers, will that continue to work moving up the chain? I hope so, but I don't know so.

I think Siri already blew past the Aquino ceiling. Aquino never had Siri's speed and defense, and Siri has already shown better ability to square up AA pitching than Aquino ever has.

For some reason, Friedl puts me in mind of Terry Puhl, who was a solid regular for a long time. Better glove than Puhl, I guess...
