Front offices do not think this way at all.

They can put a dollar value on a player. But it is not the same as salary. They do not conflate the two.

You are mixing apples and oranges.

    Bottom 4 in ERA+ 2016-18, 60 starts or more:

    Matt Harvey 76
    Yovani Gallardo 76
    James Shields 80
    Matt Moore 82

Harvey is tied with Gallardo as the worst SP in baseball over the previous three years.

But Harvey had injuries. He made a comeback. That comeback is undoubtedly a major basis for this contract.

And they both pitched for us last year.

He made a comeback where he wasn’t really effective?

Anyone who follows baseball knows that including Harvey's 2016 and 2017, when he was injured and recovering from his injury, to be grossly disingenuous.

He was very effective for some period of time. During the Reds’ hot streak he was very hot.

But like many post-injury pitchers he had his ups and downs.

So the Angels are gambling that he can be at his best for much of 2019.

One hill I will be glad to die on is using fWAR for pitchers over bWAR.

Yes. He was the 81st most effective starter last year in the majors, according to fWAR.

Roark was better in basically every stat in 2018.

Ya know what, nm, who cares. I’m glad Harvey isn’t a Red and am glad Roark is.

Roark was better and should be better in 2019. But it’s a lot closer than your cherry picked stats seem to reveal.

So now that Harvey is an Angel, how long before he follows the great Angel tradition of going on the disabled list?

I figured I didn't need to rub it in.

    But

Which is exactly why I expect the Reds will grant your wish and finish out the season with Harvey in the rotation. At which point, assuming he doesn't collapse in the next several weeks (no sure thing), he'll probably then sign with a team like the Giants or Angels and the Reds will have accomplished nothing.
Turns out letting Billy go for nothing after missing multiple opportunities to trade him was, in fact, the real height of foolishness. But it was silly not to flip Harvey, even if just for a scratch-off. I just never understood convincing yourself this wasn't going to be the most likely outcome.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”
