Glad I'm not the only one that was a little bit shocked to see Mella's name lumped in with the other two.

The Yankees have turned this Sonny Gray thing into a circus.

That is because all three are all likely to be future relievers.

Might be a little soon to call it quits on a guy with a .308 ERA, 1.235 WHIP, and 8.1 K/9 last year in 149 innings. That’s easily one of the best years we’ve seen from a pitching prospect at any level. Granted, he’s probably got a ways to go, but I don’t see any reason to assume Santillan is bound for the bullpen.

Absolutely agree. Plus he has put up some pretty respectable numbers at AA so far. Not sure why anyone would count him out at this point.

Just hoping that Santillan can stay healthy and continue to build on the impressive season he put together last year ... preferably in the Reds’ farm system!

I honestly can't remember another time where a team was so blatant and obvious about wanting to jettison someone from their roster. The fact that he's trying to play hardball with potential trade partners is even more hilarious.
When there is demand for said player among multiple teams, the team trading the player can play hard ball, even if they want to trade that player.

If the chips fall right, that could be a dangerous rotation. No aces in that hand, but they all got faces. Whatever that means.
Ace no face!?!?! Sounds like a redeal!

I always hated that rule. Play the hand you're dealt.

Things said to “ramp up” in Sonny Gray trade talks since CC Sabathia was given clearance to pitch. At least 6 teams said to be involved. Reds are one. Padres, Brewers, A’s, Padres, Mariners, Braves among others linked to Sonny.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

At this point I'd offer Romano+Mella for Gray. If they want Santillan or Gutierrez, they've got to include Frazier coming back the other way.

I think you have missed a lot of prospect years

Mahle and Castillo in 2017 were much better than Santillan last year. Having Great numbers in the Florida state league and Pensacola is normal.

Here is his write up from fansgraphs
He has progressed well in pro ball, with the Reds’ belief in his makeup and athleticism paying off, as he’s gotten more consistent across the board and is now a little more likely to be a starter than reliever. He still mostly has the big stuff he flashed as a prep, though his velo and spin rates are slightly down. Santillan has mid-rotation upside, but his fallback options if the command/consistency doesn’t work in a starter role would be an above-average multi-inning or high leverage reliever, which is much more valuable now than it was in 2015. Santillan could open 2019 in Double- or Triple-A but the pitching-starved Reds seems likely to give him a big league look at some point next year.

And with most prospect they give the rosey picture. Based on the bold he is most likely a 5 or reliever

Doug, who has been MIA here lately, noted on one of his sites that he thinks Tony should be a Top 50 prospect. I found that rather bullish.

I have found a lot of people have been rather bullish on our pitching prospects and that has not turned out so great.

I think the leagues and ballparks tend to make our pitching prospect look better than they are. I also think it helps our positional players reach their hitting potential.
Basically from A+,AA and AAA you have pitching friendly environments. This makes pitchers look good and hides their flaws better. While these environments are tough on hitters so they have an easier transition to hitting in GABP.

We have seen a ton of hitters playing regularly in AAA keep it up once they hit GABP and play regularly.

Re: Reds are still trying to deal for Sonny Gray

I tend to be the quintessential optimist when it comes to Reds prospects, but I fail to see how a guy with this profile is projected as a #5 starter or bullpen guy:

    2nd round pick
    6'3" 240 lbs
    Throws 93-95, touches 98
    2.70 ERA in A+ at age 21
3.60 ERA in AA at age 21
Bb/9 has improved every year/ down to 2.3 in 2018
    Solid 3 pitch mix, fastball/slider/changeup
    Career 0.7 HR/9
(Referring to Jack Hannahan signing with a Korean team)
Since there are no teams on the moon, I guess South Korea's far enough from Cincinnati to satisfy me.
