Free-agent left-hander Dallas Keuchel asked for a six- to seven-year contract worth $25MM to $30MM per annum at the beginning of the offseason, while fellow ex-Astros teammate and Scott Boras client Marwin Gonzalez sought a deal in the $60MM neighborhood, according to Buster Olney of ESPN.

Now I can see why we never signed either if this is true.

$30 million per year? Ouch, now I see why Keuchel isn't on a MLB roster just yet.

A high ask to start negotiations? I can't imagine such a thing.

It never hurts to ask; you might just get someone to bite.

It can hurt to ask. Sometimes people make other plans.

I'm sure professional negotiators know better.

If I'm the Reds or another pitching-starved team and Kuechel is asking for the moon, I'm unlikely to engage with him for more than a cursory discussion, if that.

Why waste time when I have so much other stuff to do?

Now, a good agent might then contact said pitching-starved team to let them know the price has dropped, but yeah, you have to know your own value.

I'm not sure I would give Keuchel half of his ask.

Not everybody is willing to wait. If you’re looking for a $300,000 house, and someone is initially asking for $1 million, you may not wait him out — even if you think he may eventually get real.

People have other things to do with their time and money. Unless you think an asset is unique, you just find another seller with another house or another pitcher.

Keuchel will be lucky to get 3-4 years now. Marwin probably won't get more than 2.

I've had doubts about Keuchel, but I've kind of come around on him a bit. I wonder if something similar to the Jake Arrieta contract with the Phillies would work.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

And still, I think his tweet was correct lol

Assuming the Reds plan to increase payroll to the reported $135M this year, do we know how much they have left to spend?

I've kind of lost track haha.

He's older and lost a step, but Adam Jones is intriguing me as an option in CF. This is a win now club, at least presumably after the trades, and he's a vet who knows the position.

He wouldn’t be any better than any option we already have, and would be the worst hitter out of all of them at this point probably too.
