I'm going to predict a lot of "Eager to prove something this year" quotes.

    - Kemp, Roark, Gennett, Puig, and Wood are all heading into free agency - they'll say they have lots to prove; this is also a direct result of most of them being on a new team
    - Votto is hungry to improve upon last year
    - CF job is up for grabs, people are eager to prove something
    - Last place team DOES have something to prove
    - New Manager and coaching staff

Thus, my "eager to prove" prediction, albeit meant to be slight humor, is based on the idea the squad has plenty to prove. We'll hear it often.

I'm always overly optimistic around this time of the season even when they're predicted to be dead last. This year is a bit different since they've obviously been in dead last for several years now and while I'm at it thanks to Hal McCoy for giving me reading lessons as a kid. If it hadn't been for Hal I probably wouldn't have bothered to learn to read at all. Well, growing up on the Dayton Daily News probably helped (Unfortunately I delivered the Journal and the Dayton Shopping News as a kid) and possibly spending 12 years in school helped as well..
Anyway, here's to the 2019 Reds..

That would be the most Reds injury - bat flip bounces off the screen and causes a concussion

Kemp interview with MLB Network. Kemp mentions he wants to play a lot.
Kemp will probably be disappointed unless OF(s) are moved, or an injury occurs.

If they start him over Winker, that is straight up negligence.

Winker will have to prove he's healthy after the shoulder surgery, and win the job in LF. Kemp isn't going to hand it to him, and neither should the coaching staff.

    Why is it Kemp's job?

First I saw this, I though “uh oh” I hope there’s no beef in the clubhouse over playing time. But I think the fact that he mentioned it shows there’s at least some awareness that he might not play every day. At least he’s not acting like it’s a forgone conclusion that he’ll be the starting LF. He wants to play a lot, good, but I don’t get the impression of entitlement (yet) which is what is really toxic in the clubhouse.

I'm just guessing Winker/Puig/Kemp across the outfield until Senzel is called up, at which point some roughly regulated sort of 3 out of 4 day rotation will probably take place. Yes, the outfield D will be terrible, but they can all rake and if they were truly worried about the D they wouldn't have cut Hamilton and would have signed a glove first CF. The Cardinals have had offensive minded outfields for two decades and made it work. Kemp is too good of a hitter to sit, he's coming to GABP, he's motivated for one last payday, he's in a stacked lineup, he's gonna play a big role (as will Puig, Senzel and Winker). Schebler is the one who is going to lose some serious time as the year progresses I would imagine, but he will see get some starts and be a legitimate thumper off the bench to use in key late game situations.

Winker had a .405 OBP/124 OPS+ as a 24 year old last year, versus .338 OBP/120 OPS+ for the 33 year old Kemp (buoyed by a strong April/May after which he hit much more like post-prime Matt Kemp -- .719 second half OPS), who will be gone in a year no matter what. Winker has already earned the lion's share of plate appearances in LF.
