Winker has already earned the lion's share of plate appearances in LF.
Not until he has proved he's healthy he hasn't.

Why do people keep glossing over shoulder surgery?

Probably because he's a .299/.397/.460 hitter in 136 MLB games and anybody who does that doesn't need to "prove" anything further to get playing time.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

At least he’s not acting like it’s a forgone conclusion that he’ll be the starting LF. He wants to play a lot, good, but I don’t get the impression of entitlement (yet) which is what is really toxic in the clubhouse.
Agreed, he did not speak from a place of entitlement, but rather that of a confident, professional athlete.

I'm going to write a sternly worded tweet to Doug about the greed.

Yeah we all know Winker can hit. It's the negative 1.9 dWAR in only 586 innings that has me worried. Hopefully a full time move to LF will take him from catastrophic to merely bad in the field.

Defensive whiz Matt Kemp will definitely be a major improvement out there lol

Kemp, Winker and Schebler will all get plenty of abs - the last year the Reds "top 3" OF going into the spring all had 500 at bats was 2017 and Hamilton only had 531. Plus there are some interleague games giving Kemp the opportunity to DH.

Kemp was a league average defender last year according to the total zone fielding stats.

You cited dWAR for Winker, why not for Kemp? Jw

At least Kemp has a defense stat I can cherry pick to make him look competent

    You know why...

Kemp interview with MLB Network. Kemp mentions he wants to play a lot.

Tom, love ya buddy, but unless he proves he's healthy and at full strength, there isn't a GM or Manager that has him in pen in their lineup.

He had major surgery, and shoulders are the trickiest most fickle areas. Pushing him too soon could cause problems. Easing him into regular playing time would be for his benefit, if the medical staff and his own doctors say he's not 100%.

But all that implies that his 136 MLB games trumps Kemp's career. Maybe it should, and it probably, ultimately, will, with games added on. But y'all are nuts to think he's ahead of Kemp on the depth chart Day One. He, like Senzel have to prove health, and in Senzel's case, health and ability.

You realize that there's an entire month of spring training games, right? And that Winker and Senzel are full-go for it? Because it feels like you don't when you talk about how Winker and Senzel need to be on the bench or in the minors to begin the season, respectively, to "prove their health".

I already knew you didn't like Winker but throwing Senzel in here too is a weird wrinkle. Are you really that high on Schebler? Doesn't HE need to prove health?
