    Reds Sign Derek Dietrich

    @Ken_Rosenthal

#Reds in agreement with free-agent infielder Derek Dietrich on a minor-league contract, pending a physical. Deal includes invitation to major-league spring training and will be worth $2M+ on the major-league side.

Yet another move I really agree with. Guy can play all over the diamond and gets on base at a very reasonable clip. Has some pop too. Plus he hits from the left side. A perfect player to round out the bench.

I like this, much better than the Cliff Pennington deals of the past.
The television crews left and about 10 reporters remained in the room. That's when Price took his turn doing the talking.
What followed was a five-minute, 34-second expletive-filled tirade. The final tally was 77 uses of the "F" word or a variant and 11 uses of a vulgar term for feces (two bovine, one equine).

want more proof that hit-by-pitch is one of the most-underated stats in baseball? it's not even mentioned here. just looking at these stats, you might think his on-base percentage numbers are way off.

hit-by-pitch is every bit as valuable as a walk. dietrich only has 144 career walks ... but he has 93 career HBP.

I’d rather my guys draw walks than HBP’s. No injuries occur with walks.

this is a good point. i still think hit-by-pitch is an underrated stat. some guys just have a knack for it. dropping that elbow when a curve ball is thrown far too inside, instead of getting out of the way (yes, technically that should not be a HBP if the batter doesn't try to get out of the way, but they very rarely enforce the rule). also shows a lot of toughness, which can rub off.

The dude is basically a copy of Schebler as far as a hitter goes. So I do not see the point especially if Schebler is a bench player.

    Schebler last year
255/.337/.439 for .776 ops nearly identical to Dietrich

Having a Schebler bat on the bench is a good thing. Having more Schebler bats on the bench is an even better thing because his bat is better than a typical bench player. They also signed him to a minor league deal, very little risk and no requirement to roster him. I don't see what's not to like about it.

If Schebler could play infield positions he’d be pretty useful too.

The point is you potentially have another fairly versatile .750+ OPS bat coming off the bench. More Schebler-type bench bats is a good thing, especially in the infield.

There's your backup infielder. If he plays well, there's also room to trade Scooter at the deadline to fill a need (assuming Senzel is sticking in center).

interesting stat: tied for mlb lead in hit-by-pitch last season (21). tied for second in mlb same category in 2016 with 24.

I like it, Dietrich is pretty much the definition of a solid utility player. Always collapse potential with those guys but not much of an investment here so you can cut bait easily if it isn’t working.

And Tanner Roark has hit him 7 times.

Split squad games could get interesting.
