MLB Eyeing Salary Raise for Minor League Players

I thought this might be worth some discussion..

Major League Baseball is looking into introducing a significant increase in salaries for minor league players, ESPN's Jeff Passan reported on Monday.

According to Passan, MLB officials suggested raising pay for minor league players during an initial collective-bargaining meeting with the group that oversees the minors. MLB also suggested a higher standard of living conditions and better transportation.

The lowest acceptable payroll amount for ownership to show they are not greedy pigs is 15 million more than they are currently paying. No matter what that currently is.

I think the higher standard of living/transportation is more important than the pay. You can pay them peanuts (which they already do, essentially), and it's not really a problem IMO, but the teams should make sure the players have solid housing, food, medical care and equipment. If for no other reason, the teams should want the players to have that for selfish reasons, because the players are assets, and you want your assets to perform at the highest level possible. If their living conditions are poor,, they don't have proper equipment and they're not putting the right fuel in their bodies, you're impairing your assets.

The Blue Jays just announced a 50% pay raise for all minor league players a few days ago.

Yea I agree with this. I see minor league baseball players as guys chasing their dreams. There is nothing wrong with that, and good for them. I just don't see them any different than a ski bum or a golfer toiling around on the mini tours, or a musician trying to make it. It takes a lot of struggle and sacrifice to make it to the top. The vast majority of minor leaguers won't ever sniff MLB. There is nothing wrong with that, they can say that they are in the top 1% of people to ever play their sport.

The higher standard of living makes sense and I think MLB should be forced to make sure the facilities meet a high standard. And things like better facilities, living quarters, better nutrition, etc. only give their players a better chance. Makes perfect sense.

This is the part that's bizarre to me. If you're worried about socking a 401k, then do something else, but why major league teams would ignore fundamental building blocks like nutrition doesn't make any sense from a business perspective.

Re: MLB Eyeing Salary Raise for Minor League Players

An ind depth article about it in the Athletic a few days back:

    https://theathletic.com/830452/2019/...n-their-lives/

If you have a subscription, I recommend taking the time to read it. If not, here are a few tidbits from it.

“If you come up in arms about fair wage or just being able to put food on the table for yourself, you’ll get released,” he continued. “I know 100 guys that would wanna talk to you about this, but they won’t.”

“We can’t say anything,” one Class-A player shared. “Like, I don’t want that to be me. I just got picked, I want to see if I can make it.”

Many players have the option of requesting equipment through their respective agencies, who are able to provide gear, cleats, nutritional supplements and other necessities. Still, factoring in all the expenses of playing professionally, even while recognizing the obvious impact of bonuses, it’s a sobering fact that in 2019, the federally recognized poverty line for a single-income household is $14,380.

“We had nowhere to live, no help finding a place to live,” Czarkowski recalled over the phone. “They basically say, ‘You have two days in a hotel. You need to find a place to live in two days.’
“In Trenton, I lived in an apartment with five other guys,” Yankees 2009 first-round pick Slade Heathcott told The Athletic by phone. “That’s the norm. You get a two-bedroom and you pack as many people as possible in to make it at least halfway feasible for people. The guys that are able to make more money, they normally pay more in rent than the guys that can’t, just to try to help out.”
“We’re going to get the pitching.” -Bob Castellini
“You got the pitching, now what?” - Reds fans

One wonders how much the Players Association is on board with this.

They need to. When I played for the Beloit Snappers in 99 and 00 I barely made enough to live.
