    @ByRobertMurray

    Jimmy Nelson experienced right elbow soreness after Thursday's appearance. The Brewers will slow him down, Counsell said, but don't anticipate he will need tests done. They believe he will start Triple-A season on time.

    "We're going to have to pause a little bit," Counsell said.

    Brewers have already lost Jeffress and Knabel for extended time. Now Nelson (though it sounds like he's headed for AAA anyway).

    Chris Sale extension with #RedSox will be five years, $145 million, sources tell The Athletic. Sale will earn $15M this season in final year of current deal. Extension is pending physical. Will run from 2020 to ‘24.

    Sounds like players are concerned about being free agents what with the time it took to get Harper and Machado signed and Kimbrel and Keuchel still out there. I think even Mike Trout would have concerns if he tested the free agent market. Now that sounds silly since he's the best but Harper and Machado aren't Swiss cheese either. The contracts they signed were generous, no doubt. But if there were more than 2-3 teams bidding on their services, they would have got much better deals. Now whether this is collusion or not is another argument. But right now teams aren't falling all over each other to sign free agents like they used to. Even the best guys have to be worried.

    I mean even if it’s a lot of money, he likely could’ve gotten more if he went on the open market.

    I just think that's an overplayed sentiment. Boston HAS a lot of money. Sale has worn down the last month of the season like every year. Who was going to out bid them? NY? Maybe. LA? The market for an uber contract is more limited than people think, and the AAV of his contract is $29M. That's got to be top 10 in baseball right now.

    Devin Mesoraco’s time with Mets likely coming to an end

    Devin Mesoraco was among the Mets players reassigned to minor-league camp Saturday, but the veteran catcher has informed team brass that he won’t report and wants to be released to pursue other potential big league opportunities.

    According to an industry source, Mesoraco — who last month returned to the team on a minor-league deal — would rather retire than play for Triple-A Syracuse. Mesoraco, according to the source, was under the belief he would be added to the major-league roster by the end of camp.

    It is looking like a decent year for Rule 5 selections:

    The #1, #5, #6, #7, #8, #9, #10, #11, and #13 picks look as though they will make their respective clubs' opening day roster.

    The #4 pick is slated to start the year on the DL with bicep tendinitis.

    The #2, #3, #12 and #14 picks have been returned to their original teams.

    ****Side Note: Elvis Luciano, the #9 pick, who turned 19 a month ago will likely be the youngest player on opening day rosters if he isn't returned to KCR. (he has never pitched above short season RK ball and has been destroyed in Spring Training this year)

    He actually explained why that wasn't his top priority, Red Sox having spring training really close to his home, so he actually gets to go to his son's little league games, that they try to win every year, and all the greatness of what he experienced last season convinced him that he didn't want to leave.

    This makes me wonder if there's an upper salary per year threshold, beyond which players just don't care and other considerations come into play. It really seems like that threshold would be in the $25-$30M range.

    Giants DFA'd Merandy Gonzales. He's 23, and seems like a good candidate for a conversion to the bullpen. Reds could use some additional depth. doesn't have any options left though, so probably way too late to claim him and try and pass him through waivers like the Giants are hoping to do.

    As an aside, Teams that do this must hate the announcement from MLBTraderumors. I mean they get reports and everything, but sneaking a guy through seems like a thing of the past. (Robert Stephenson, we are talking about you buddy.)
