Re: 2019 Minor-League Player of the Day

In his last week (six games) Pabel Manzanero is 11 for 26, with 3 doubles, four homers, 6 runs and 7 RBI. The 4 Ks in 26 ABs is not bad at all... the only troubling thing is that he has zero walks during this period and only 2 walks on the season.

During this week long hot streak his OPS has risen from .589 to .954

Re: 2019 Minor-League Player of the Day

    Games of Wednesday, April 24

Hendrik Clementina, Daytona . . . 3-4, HR (1), 2 RBI. Been waiting for the big catcher to break out. He banged 18 homers for Dayton last year in only 340 AB. This one, according to Doug, cleared the scoreboard and landed in Jackie Robinson's parking lot.

Also notable on a night when the Tortugas won their sixth straight game and swept their second straight series.

    Chattanooga

Ibandel Isabel: 2-run homer (4) in the eighth delivered the tying and winning runs. Appears up to the challenge of Double-A.

    Gavin LaValley: double, walk, run.

Luis Gonzalez: Pinch single brought in a pair in the seventh.

    Victor Payano: 1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 K.

    Ryan Hendrix: scoreless inning, 1 H, 2 K.

Alex Powers: 2 clean innings, 2 K, Sv (3). Closing games in a bullpen that includes Hendrix and Kuhnel.

    Daytona

    Michael Byrne: 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K. Does his athletic ability match his pitchability?

    Mac Sceroler: 3 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K. Picked up the win after blowing the save.

    Miles Gordon: 2-4.

    Jonathan India: 1-5, HR (3), 2 R, 2 RBI. Reached on a 10th-inning strikeout, scored winning run.

Bruce Yari: 1-2. Big double in 10th.

    Louisville (rain-shortened)

Nick Senzel: 1-3, booming double, run. I give him another week, week and a half.

    Josh VanMeter: 1-3, double.

    Dayton

Jay Schuyler: 3-5, 2 RBI. California catcher, last year's 7th-rounder, is one of the season's early surprises.

Juan Martinez: 2-3, RBI, sac. On the rise and rocking an OPS of .874.

Miguel Hernandez: 2-4, walk, 2 runs, RBI. One more good game could nudge the shortstop's career OPS over .700.

    Matt Pidich: 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K. Season debut for last year’s 8th-rounder.

Van Meter looks totally for real. He now has been a consistent offensive force for the month of April. OPS .990 including a .379 OBP and not a horrendous K-walk (18/8) ratio.

I gotta believe the Reds could find a spot for his middle of the infield bat considering the current offensive struggles.

Re: 2019 Minor-League Player of the Day

    Games of Friday, April 26

Josh VanMeter, Louisville: 5-6, 2 home runs, 3 RBI. That's a pretty good night at the office, I would say. VanMeter has absolutely blistered the ball so far this year while playing all over the diamond, manning 1B in this one. He leads the International League in HRs (8) and is tied for most RBIs (20).

Honorable mention: Sherman Johnson, Louisville: 3-5, 2 home runs, 6 RBI. The 28-year-old former Angels farmhand is long removed from any talk of being a prospect, but he's a solid player to have around and hammered a pair of 3 run shots last night.

In other action, with Louisville's offensive explosion leading the day (but sadly not to a W):

Nick Senzel, Louisville: 1-4, 2 walks. Playing CF and hitting leadoff...future Reds role?

Christian Colon, Louisville: 3-6, 2 RBI, stolen base

    Nick Longhi, Louisville: 2-5, 2B

Courtney Hawkins, Louisville: 2-5, HR, 2 RBI. Seems slightly strange that Hawkins is in AAA since he never really mastered AA, but youth is not on the former 1st rounder's side.

Matt Bowman, Louisville: 2 innings, all 0s. Only Bats pitcher not to allow a run in the team's 16-14 loss.

    Narciso Crook, Chattanooga: 3-5, RBI

    Taylor Trammell, Chattanooga: 2-5

Tyler Stephenson, Chattanooga: 1-3, 2 walks

    Brantley Bell, Chattanooga: 2-4, 2B

Alfredo Rodriguez, Chattanooga: 2-4, 2B, RBI

Ryan Hendrix, Chattanooga: 1.2 innings, 1 hit, 1 walk, 5 strikeouts, 1 run, 0 earned runs. Took a blown save here in a game the Lookouts ended up winning due to the unearned run, but Hendrix has yet to allow an earned run now in 10.1 innings.

    Jose Garcia, Daytona: 1-4, BB

Jonathan India, Daytona: 1-3, 2B, BB, RBI. The Florida Gator seems to be finding his footing down in Daytona, exclusively playing 3B (so far).

    Bruce Yari, Daytona: 3-4, 2B

Andy Sugilio, Daytona: 1-4, 2 RBI

Aneurys Zabala, John Ghyzel, and Jesse Stallings threw 4.1 scoreless innings after starter Ryan Lillie gave up 3 runs in 4.2 innings

Mariel Bautista, Dayton: 2-5, RBI, stolen base

Jay Schuyler, Dayton: 2-4, BB, 2 RBI. Continues to swing a hot bat.

Jonathan Willems, Dayton: 1-4, 2B, RBI

Eduardo Salazar, Dayton: 2 innings, 2 hits, 0 walks, 1 strikeout, 0 runs

Re: 2019 Minor-League Player of the Day

    Games of Saturday April 27

    Your MiLPoD
    Rob Wooten, Lookout: 6 IP 4 H, 1 ER, BB, 8 K, win (1)
. It's also about guys like this. Wooten is 33, started in Helena in 2008 as a reliever and 13th rounder out of UNC. Over the long strange course of it, he has 94 saves and now 20 wins. Hats off to him, from Helena to Huntsville and beyond.

    Honorable mention
Ibandel Isabel: 2-4, 2 HR (7), 3 RBI. 4th homer in 4 games, putting the Southern League on notice after crushing the FSL all-time record for most homers in a season. His 7 now lead the league (as do his 36 Ks), and he's 3rd in SLG. First one was off Freddy Peralta, who dominated the Reds earlier this year.

Also notable on a night when some kind of turtle contagion struck Daytona, forcing prospects off the field, and the Dragons pen was aflame again...

    Cody Reed, Bat: 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K. Now has 18 Ks in 12 AAA innings with a 1.25 WHIP. Zach Duke, on notice.

    Keury Mella, Bat: 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, BB, 5 K.

Josh VanMater, Bat: 0-2, 3 BB, SB (4). Another productive game, this time at 2B. OPS 1.100.

Brian O'Grady, Bat: 2-4, BB, RBI, SB (2). Played 1B, hitting .357 with an OPS of 1.140.

Rob Refsnyder, Bat: 2-4, RBI. Seoul native hitting .400 over his last 10.

Nick Longhi, Bat: 0-1, 3 BB.

Narciso Crook, Lookout: 2-4, SB (1). Out of the leadoff spot. Still just 23.

    Jose Siri, Lookout: 2-3, 2B (4), sac.

Alfredo Rodriguez, Lookout: 2-3, 2B (3), SB (2). Up to .294 as he settles in nicely in the 8 hole.

Alex Powers, Lookout: IP, BB, 2 K, save (4). 4 for 4 in save chances, WHIP at 0.82. Not the sexy pick in the horse race with hendrix and Kuhnel, but the numbers give him a chance.

Ty Boyles, Lookout: 1-1, 2B (1), RBI. Gave up a couple runs in a couple innings, but look at the base knock. They say the big boy wields the lumber.

Jonathan India, Tortuga: 0-2, HBP. Yikes, left the game early.

Stuart Fairchild, Tortuga: 0-1, BB. Left the game early, yikes again.

Garcia, Kolosvary, Yari; Tortugas: 1-3, BB

Wendy Bautista, Tortuga: 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K. This guy is lights out on Saturdays.

Mac Sceroler, IP, K. Worst name in the system, but sporting an OK ERA so far (2.57)

Jonathan Willems, Dragon: 2-4 2 RBI. Had half the Dragon's hits (but also both of their errors).

Jay Schuyler and Shard Munroe, 1-3, BB

When I saw that Cody Reed had gone 3 innings, my first thought that they were stretching him out. Either reliever or starter, either way the long stint strikes me as significant.

Their starting pitching (and pitching in general) has been atrocious. I wouldn't read a lot more into it other than they needed the innings and Reed was on for one night.

    Today (April 28) Vlad two-thirds of an inning, 5 BB, 3H, 6ER.

Always been a Reed fan. Probably just wishful thinking on my part.

Re: 2019 Minor-League Player of the Day

    Games of Sunday, April 28

TJ Friedl , Chattanooga . . . 2-3, HR (1), 4 RBI, SB (4). The plucky outfielder, a source of Redszone optimism a month ago, has been off to a Schebler-like start. Left the game with an injury after stealing second.

Honorable Mention: Jimmy Herget, Louisville . . . 4 innings, 1 hit, 0 runs, walk, 3 K. Nice rebound for the skinny sidewinder, who’d been losing luster. It was a relief appearance, of course, the length necessitated by Gutierrez’s 5-walk, two-thirds-of-an-inning start.

Also notable on a day when Chattanooga, winning its fifth straight, became the second organization team to reach .500. Lookout! . . .

    Chattanooga

Tyler Stephenson: 2-4, double, R, RBI.

Alfredo Rodriguez: Single, run, RBI. Checking in at a consistent .296.

    Tejay Antone: 6 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 ER. 2 BB, 7 K, W. Also singled. 25-year-old Texan keeps keepin’ on.

Victor Payano: 2 innings, zeros, 2 K. Victor Velocity.

    Dayton

Juan Martinez: 2-4, HR (1), 3 RBI. Third baseman’s OPS up to .896.

Carlos Rivero: 1-2, walk, SB (1). Venezuelan middle infielder showing early improvement with the bat.

Matt Pidich: 2 IP, zeros, 3 K. Numbers look even better in the context of the Dragons’ other 3 pitchers giving up 19 hits and 14 runs.

    Daytona

Bruce Yari: 1-3, double, 2 walks, SB (2). Honestly don’t know what to make of this fellow. Walks a lot, some power. Hits leadoff, cleanup. No prospect buzz. Best I can come up with is a Brian O’Grady comparison.

Alejo Lopez: 2-4, 2 R, RBI, SB (4). Hitting .330. Forgive me for occasionally admiring batting average.

    Randy Ventura: 2-4, R, RBI.

Lorenzo Cedrola: 2-4, RBI. Hope the little CF measures up in one of those pound-for-pound things, because he goes 152.

Jesse Stallings: 2 innings, 0-0-0, 3 K. An acceptable 0.00 ERA after 9.1 innings in Dayton and Daytona.

    Louisville

Josh VanMeter: 1-2, BB, HBP. A little bit of everything so far from the lefty-swinging Indianan. (I wish we could say Hoosier without making people think he went to IU.)

    Nick Longhi: HR (3).

Jackson Stephens: 1.1 IP, 1 hit, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K. Six straight scoreless appearances for the embattled Alabaman, covering 10.2 innings.

Courtney Hawkins: 1 IP, 1 hit, zeros. Outfielder.

Re: 2019 Minor-League Player of the Day

    Games of Monday, April 29

MiPOD JoshVanMeter - One would think that on a day where only two affiliates play that Nick Senzel's 3 for 6 with a bomb, 2 RBI and 4 runs or Tony Santillan's 8:1 K:BB ratio would be enough to give them the crown, but not with Josh "The Natural" VanMeter blowing up (again) with a 4 for 5 night, with 3 HR, a walk, 4 runs scored and 8 RBI. Our friend, mace, pointed out that VanMeter leads the International League in OPS, home runs, slugging, total bases, RBIs, runs, and hits. But he's only batting .370 with a .454 OBP. Kinsm compared The Natural's career SLG prior this year (.381) to his SLG this year (.678). VanMeter had some previous periods of decent power in the past (.175 ISO in 401 PA at High A in 2016) and then had his .211 ISO last year in 362 PA, but no one saw a .413 ISO, accompanied with a great BB rate and solid K rate this year. Given Jose Peraza's offensive ineptitude, I would certainly not mind The Natural getting a shot at the keystone in short order.

Honorable Mention Nick Senzel and Tony Santillan - Both of the aforementioned players deserved the title of MiPOD for their sterling performances last night, but The Natural did not allow for it.

    The Louisville Bats won 15-4.

Rob Refsnyder went 3-4 with a walk, triple, run scored, and he had 2 RBI.
Brian O’Grady went 4-6 with a double, home run (4), and 2 RBI.
Courtney Hawkins went 1-5 with a double and a run scored.
Blake Trahan went 1-4 with a walk and a run scored.
Jesus Reyes threw 2.0 hitless innings with a walk and a strikeout.
Sal Romano threw a shutout inning with a strikeout.

    The Chattanooga Lookouts lost 14-5.

Narciso Crook went 1-4 with a walk and a double.
Jose Siri went 2-5 with a run scored.
Taylor Trammell went 1-4 with a run scored.
Tyler Stephenson went 2-4 with a 2-run home run (2).
Luis Gonzalez went 2-4 with 2 doubles and a run scored.

The Daytona Tortugas had the day off.

The Dayton Dragons had the day off.

What in the Dutch power is going on? VanMeter just turned 24 in March. He's more a bloomer than a late bloomer.

This is true. I debated in my head whether or not I'd label him a late bloomer since he's really not that old (he's got just 3 months on Senzel) but considering he's been toiling in the minors since 2013 with only decent results until recently, I think it's appropriate. The important thing is he's blooming.
