This Day in History - May 20

May 20, 2010, Reds at Braves. The Reds blew a huge lead by giving up 7 runs in the bottom of the 9th.

Brooks Conrad's pinch-hit grand slam gave the Braves a 10-9 walk-off victory at Turner Field. The grand slam barely cleared the fence, with the ball deflecting off Laynce Nix's glove.

The Reds went to 23-18 on the year.

If you're a masochist, here's video of the entire game.

At least Arthur Rhodes had a good 9th inning.

I remember expecting that game to lead to a collapse, and instead they came out the next day and won like it didn't even happen.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

    50 Years ago today Reds 4 - Phillies 0

    Tuesday, May 20, 1969
    Attendance: 4,191
    Venue: Crosley Field
    Game Duration: 1:42

Pete Rose in CF, Pete played 500 innings in CF in 1969, he would play 65 innings over the next two years and never again.

That attendance is telling of the end of the road for Crosley and the Reds played 8 games with less than 5,000 in the stands in 1969

May 20, 1945. The Reds split a double header with the Boston Braves.

In things that would probably not happen today, they brought in the same pitcher (Hod Lisenbee) to close both games.

May 20 was not a good day for the last three Reds world championship teams.

In 1975 Reds lose to the Mets 6-2. Koosman gets the win while Gullett suffers the loss. Johnny Bench and Joe Torre hit Hrs. Reds drop to 5 games behind the Dodgers in the NL west.

In 1976 Reds lose to the Giants at the Stick 6-5. Giants score a run in the 8th to win it. Will McEanany gets the loss. Foster homers for the Reds. All of 6400 fans attend this game. Reds drop to 1.5 games behind the Dodgers.

In 1990 the Reds lose to the Cardinals 6-2. Danny Jackson takes the loss and Dibble gives up three runs in relief. Reds still have a healthy 7.5 game lead n the NL West.

There seems to be a lot of losing on this date in Reds history. Maybe it's a good thing that they have the day off today.

May 20, 2014. Reds lost to the Nationals with a rare awful day for Cueto. 8 runs on 6 hits in 5 innings pitched in what would be his worst start of 2014.

    Their record was 20-24.
