We Need to Talk About Disco

The music itself is kind of underrated, lot of undeserved early 80s backlash. The pitcher is the problem though.

Since returning on June 5, 2018, DeSclafani's pitched 163.2 innings and given up 37 HRs. That comes out to a 2.0 HR/9 in about a full season's work. Obviously the league has become pretty HR friendly and even top flight talent like Justin Verlander will sometimes struggle with keeping the ball in the yard, but 2.0 is simply beyond the pale. That's essentially an unusable pitcher, even factoring in that DeSclafani is pretty good at accumulating strikeouts and avoiding walks. He's essentially got the Michael Pineda problem, a starting pitcher with clear abilities but who can't stop missing out over the plate. The first place Twins with a lot going for them can probably afford to give Pineda some slack, it increasingly seems like the Reds cannot do the same for DeSclafani given the numerous problems they have. The Reds gave Disco his starts last year to figure things out and this year they not only haven't gotten better but have gotten a bit worse.

So we've acknowledged that there's a problem, but what's the solution? This is where it gets tricky. DeSclafani has options, you can send him down to AAA. Or throw him in the bullpen or whatever, see if that might help. But with Alex Wood still a ways away, who is the replacement? Lucas Sims seems like the only realistic one internally, but it's hard to tell if he's ready to be a better option than DeSclafani at this point. This is where having Reed/Romano/Stephens still starting would have been nice, instead they are all bullpen guys for the Bats while Vlad Gutierrez and Jose Lopez have massive struggles to keep the ball in the yard against AAA teams.

Are there external options? The landscape doesn't look great. I called for the Reds to be proactive and grab Gio Gonzalez for this exact scenario, but he's a Brewer now. Semi-capable arms like Edwin Jackson have also been scooped up. You could go full Krivsky and just start taking fliers on a guys, such as lefty knuckleballer Ryan Feirerabend. This route is unlikely to work, but it probably couldn't hurt.

Not sure what the answer is, and my gut feeling is that the Reds will just continue to ride it out in the hopes that a guy who hasn't been consistently good since 2016 will suddenly turn it around. But I think they need to accept that there's an obvious problem that they failed to fully plan for, and remember moving forward that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

He is choking up too much on the ball before he throws it.

He's been pretty great against righties.... but absolutely decimated against lefties..... doesn't seem to have the change of pace pitch or pure velocity to get it past them.... but his arsenal has locked up righties pretty well.

Might make a good candidate as a ROOGY out of the pen and potential long man.

Give Sims/Reed a chance in the rotation as a bridge until Wood is ready?

The Cardinals just moved Wacha to the bullpen. So it can be done.

Without Disco you don't get new wave that's awesome stuff.

As for the pitcher, eh, someone has to be the number 5 starter.

He's definitely not the first starter to be at the bottom of the starting pitching food chain on a team.. He's had a few outstanding games, but not enough. Unfortunately he's had to face some pretty good hitting teams of late. Still only tossing to the tune of a 4.99 ERA which is hardly the worst among all starters in the league.
I'm far from defending him, but I do think once we start playing a few lesser teams he might just begin showing his value again.. We'll see..
Imagine...we coulda kept Harvey with his 7.50 ERA and his 11 HR's
We could be in a lot worse shape like for example, Baltimore with their -108 run differential .. They have 16 pitchers with ERA's over 5.60, many I assume from their minor league teams.. As of now they have 26 pitchers listed as having pitched this season already.. Compare that to the Reds 15..

Honestly, Disco giving serviceable #5 numbers is a win to me.

Stop throwing hitters pitches that they have a tendency to knock over the fence.

In other words, if they nail Low Fastball's over the fence more than they do other pitches, stop calling for that pitch by the Catcher/Manager and stop throwing it by the Pitcher.

    It's not rocket science.

I’ve mentioned it a few places but he needs to be a starter against very RHH lineups and avoided against LHB lineups. Against a team like the cubs who are quite balanced, use an opener and get 2-4 innings out of him in the middle of the game.

Re: We Need to Talk About Disco

Reds have to look to the future. Disco doesn't seem to hold much promise for them. He's become very home run prone. He's a FA after 2020.

Cost-benefit: Is the cost of his current pitching worth the benefit of his future promise for the club? Tilts negative, unfortunately.

I doubt they do anything immediate, they don't seem to have other starters forcing their way into the rotation.

But the day of reckoning is coming. Disco needs to step it up dramatically or Wood will take his spot when he returns.
