farmer as the backup catcher is interesting. he really has good value as a utility guy if he can be a legit option as a backup catcher.

The Reds play 9 games in the 10 days TB will be on the IL. You have to figure Farmer starts 2-3 times.
The only other option is to send Ervin down, cut RJ Alaniz, and promote 30 year old Juan Graterol, who has 106 major league ABs in his career.
(Referring to Jack Hannahan signing with a Korean team)
Since there are no teams on the moon, I guess South Korea's far enough from Cincinnati to satisfy me.

You Oughta Know cutting Alaniz is one of 8 Easy Steps to opening spots on the 40 man roster.

I hope the plan is not to start Farmer at catcher.
    That is just dumb.
I can understand if there is an injury/emergency and the team is forced to put Farmer at Catcher, but that should not be a plan.

Not having two catchers on the roster is waving the white flag.
Doesn't send a good message to the fanbase that the team is trying to win.
Send down Ervin and bring up someone that can play the position of catcher.

Isn't it ironic, don't you think?

This is a step up from the days of 3 catchers.

According to several minor league coaches, Alaniz still has a chip on their shoulder over being let go by the Dave Couliers.

I assume when we need an another starter at C that we'll bring one up.

In the meantime, Farmer is the emergency C.

    Settle down.

I don't know if I agree. I think we will actually see Farmer get some action behind the plate, though Casali will certainly get the lion's share of the playing time.

Best to keep Farmer for flexibility/emergency C, and bring up somebody else for the 2-3 out of the next 9 games. Now that Scooter is here and Dietrich can play some corner outfield, send down Ervin when a catcher is needed. Do not burn Casali out by playing him more that 6-7 of the next 9.

Re: Scooter activated, Barnhart to IL

With Barnhart out, I’m very happy with the current four man bench. Farmer and Peraza are versatile. Dietrich is a potent LHH and can play infield-outfield. Ervin is a RHH alternative for Winker, Dietrich, maybe others against LHP.

You have versatility, a strong LHH, a platoon RHH.

Yes, Farmer will have to show he can catch adequately but he’s worked at catcher for quite awhile and I’m hopeful he can handle it.
