    Playoffs?!? PLAYOFFS!!?!

A quick look at the playoff possibilities of the 8 Reds' farm clubs:

LOUISVILLE (46-64) - Snowball's chance. The Bats are currently dead last in their division. They 15.5 games back with about 30 contests left. Not happening. The team has not made the playoffs since 2010 when Rick Sweet was managing. Whatever happened to Sweet? He is now in the Brewers organization, managing their AAA squad - the San Antonio Missions. Louisville has been playing much better baseball lately, winning 11 of their last 15. Still, no playoffs in 2019.

CHATTANOOGA (Overall - 49-60, Second half - 13-27) - Snowball's chance. Similar to the Bats, the Lookouts are ensconced in last place, double-digit games out with roughly 30 to go. Not happening. Chattanooga has won 3 straight games, but it's a case of too little, too late. No playoffs in 2019.

DAYTONA (Overall - 54-53, Second half - 19-23) - Reasonable chance. Everyone in Daytona's division is playing sub-.500 baseball in the second half of the season, save Dunedin. Providentially, Dunedin just happens to be the first-half winner, which has kept the Tortugas in the playoff picture. Currently, they are just one game out of a playoff spot. However, the second-place, third-place and fourth-place are all on losing streaks. Yay! Daytona has now dropped 5 of its last 6 games, but no one seems to want to grab this race by the throat. So, by default, the Turtles are still in the playoff hunt.

DAYTON (Overall - 46-63, Second half - 18-21) Slim pickings. The Dragons are currently sitting 5 games out with 30ish to go. The bad news is that they are in 6th place. It would take a serious run to jump all of those teams, considering 4 of the 6 are sporting winning records. Dayton has won 3 in a row, 2 in walk-off fashion, keeping the dream alive. Best guestimate from this angle is no playoffs. But, you never know.

BILLINGS (Overall - 20-24, Second half - 5-1) Reasonable chance. Thank God for second halves. The Mustangs stunk it up in the first half of the season, finishing in the cellar. But, the slate has been wiped clean, and Billings has opened up a 1.5 game gap with a month to go, by stampeding out of the second-half gate. Billings has been a staple in the playoffs recently, having participated in post-season action in 5 of the last 6 seasons. I think that matters, and am optimistic about their chances, But, there is still a long way to go.

GREENEVILLE (Overall - 17-23) Slim pickings. The Appalachian League does not believe in dividing their season into 2 halves, and that hurts Greeneville. The G-Reds are dead last in their division, and could have used a reset. However, despite being in last place, they sit just 5.5 games back of first. That is doable with a month left in the season, but not realistic. I would not be saving up to purchase playoff tickets just yet.

AZREDS (Overall - 15-21, Second half (5-3) Reasonable chance. Once again, thank you AZL for splitting your season into 2 parts. The AZ-Reds were horrible in the first half of the season, and then started out the second half by losing their first 3 games. And then out of nowhere, they win 5 consecutive. Where did that come from? They have 20 games to go and sit just a game out of first place. Will they revert back? Or will momentum carry them into the playoffs. Baseball is an odd duck. Keep your fingers crossed.

DSLREDS (Overall 36-16) Slam dunk. Book it. The D-Reds are 7 games ahead of the second-place team, and 11 games clear of the third-place squad. There are just 20 games left on the schedule. Playoff baseball straight ahead for this squad.

There you have it. Despite an overarching organizational record of 283-324 (.466), and just 2 teams with winning records (1 just barely), Reds farm clubs have a chance of claiming 4 playoff spots. (DSL-Reds are slam dunk. Daytona, Billings and AZL-Reds are all, to varying degrees, reasonable.)

Better than I would have imagined.

Nice work, but the playoff formats are different for each league. Dayton is actually four games out of the wildcard slot. And while they are in sixth place, two of the teams ahead of them are not in the race as first half qualifiers. If you look at the standings, they would need to jump Lansing, who is one game ahead of them, and EITHER South Bend or Bowling Green. I am not suggesting that is likely, just giving you a look at what they actually need to do.

You are correct. I just assumed all of the leagues would play it the same way. My bad.

    Bump.

The DSL Reds have clinched at least a tie for the divisional title. They have 10 games left. Surely, they will get it done. The D-Reds are the lone team in the system (1 majors, 8 minors) with a winning record. They stand at 42-20.

Billings leads their division in the second half by 1 game, giving them a solid shot at making the playoffs.

It looks like those will be the only two teams playing post-season baseball in the organization. Every other team's chances land somewhere between slim and none. I have my fingers crossed that Joey goes full-on Votto over the final 7 weeks and the Reds make it, but...……………

Of note today down on the island, Jose Acosta went 3 for 3 with 2 walks today. His line now stands at .400/.500/.607/1.107. Interesting to note, Acosta has pilfered 24 bases without being thrown out once this season.

The Billings Mustangs have caught fire, winning 6 consecutive contests. This has pushed their second-half record to 14-5, giving them a commanding a commanding 4-game lead. They are at the halfway point of the second half, and have 19 games left to play.
It seems as if they are on their way to playoff baseball. The streak pushes their overall record to one game above .500 at 29-28. The Mustangs have finally gotten rolling once they bounced Nick Lodolo from the starting rotation.
