With 2 outs you generally send the runner if he has even a 40% chance of scoring, especially with a weaker hitter coming up.
FWIW, if Barnhart had tried to score from 2nd on VanMeter's single, he would have been safe as the throw was up the line. Although the correct play was clearly to hold him.

I'm less defending him and more I don't really care. The Reds have been thrown out at home 14 times. That includes GB's when the runner on third breaks on contact. I bet if we went back over every game this year, his mistakes total 4-7, and in those instances maybe the Reds lost half those games. In those losses maybe half were by 2 runs or less.
We might be talking about 3-4 games this year where holding the runner MIGHT have lead to a Reds win, or might not. And everyone demanding a guy get fired will say "if the Reds miss the playoffs by one game..."
