the reasons a lot of people dont like marty are the very reasons i like him: he gets cranky, says what he means, and speaks truth to power. give me that over any of those grinning everything's wonderful toadies.

The end of an era, for sure.

My idea of heaven would be sitting at the picnic table in the back yard, with my late dad, on a warm summer night, listening to Marty and Joe call another BRM win.

Say what you will about Marty’s crankiness, but over the last few years, Amanda has really mellowed Marty (“Well said, Mr Hall of Fame Announcer”) out. 10 years ago he was a bitter crank. He’s loving life now, and I’m happy for him.
    sorry we're boring

Great post.... Marty (and Joe) take me back to my early childhood. They are part of what I knew as the BRM. Because the Reds weren’t on TV every night back then we had the old Philco murmuring in the background of the kitchen or the transistor when we were away from the house, fishing or whatever.

He has seemed to mellow the last few years. He is still opinionated, but I agree that I’d rather have Marty speaking his mind than someone like Jim Kelch and the pure vanilla and sunshine..... I am really going to miss Marty.

    Re: Month of Marty

Family picnics in Delhi Park, running free with my cousins, dads playing horse shoes and drinking Burger, Marty's voice would fade in and out from all the portable radios as we traveled from one end of the park to the other. We'd hardly miss an out. That's where I go when I listen to Marty; I was 11, the Reds were the greatest team in the universe and my little corner of it lived, breathed and slept baseball and our hometown team. He's a crank and full of himself, but he talked us through the greatest era in Reds baseball and to me will always be inseparable from it. I feel bad for the younger folks on the board who didn't experience Marty and Joe during those years.

    Re: Month of Marty

I'm hoping Aquino continues to set these most home run in least amount of games right up to Marty's final game. Then we can have bookends for Marty's career. 1st inning of very first game, Hank Aaron hits home run #714 to tie the Babe and maybe a final inning home run by Aquino for another record call in St. Louis.

BTW, just looked up the box score of Marty's first game. Of the 18 starters in that game, 4 went on to be Reds managers and of course, all through Marty's tenure.

Like him or not Marty is Reds baseball to me. Growing up in Mississippi, I became a Reds fan as a 6 year old in 1978. I would find the Reds broadcast on 700 WLW(yes we can get it at night here in MS) and listen to Joe and Marty. As stated in another post, another vestige of my youth is gone.

I think pretty much anyone can see that technically Marty is about as good as anyone everó the ease with which he calls the action is pretty remarkable. But there were times as he got older where you really had to wonder if he even wanted to be there that day/night. It wasnít just being opinionatedó it seemed certain things bothered him or annoyed him so much that he felt airing those grievances took precedence over desrcibing the action. The beauty of Scully or Harwell is that their demeanor and joy never wavered. Now; maybe they were ďactingĒ sometimes; but for me, thatís part of the gig.

Anyway, didnít mean to derail this into another bash Marty thing... and for the record, I DO believe he was excellent at his craft and deserving of these honors. And he is undoubtedly a Cincy/Reds legend.
I think thatís a fair assessment... and one that even he might agree with.

I think it probably applies to even those other legends at times, to a lesser degree. If Vin Scully had to sit through as bad of baseball that Marty did from all but two or three years between 1990-2010, more of that may have come out of him as well. Itís human nature.

The Reds played some bad baseball in the 80's, 90's and early 2000's while The Ol' Lefthander was still there.

Marty got whole lot worse after Joe left.

Hummel on baseball: Retiring Reds broadcaster Brennaman has seen enough of today's game

ďIím not as big a fan of the game as I used to be,Ē Brennaman told the Post-Dispatch this weekend. ďAnd that all factored into my decision. I donít enjoy watching the game as much I used to. Thereís too much standing around. Itís all about home runs, strikeouts and walks. You see very few teams hit and run. Quite honestly, I was impressed Thursday night with how the Cardinals stole bases (they had three, with only hits).

ďWhy that style escapes the Ďnumbersí guys . . . I donít understand it. Itís a fun game to watch when the game is played the way you and I have been used to seeing the game played for all these years. But I truly believe ó and I may be stupid ó that at some point down the road, that pendulum is going to swing back to the middle.Ē

Maybe because teams are playing to win and not playing to ensure that Marty isn't bored?

Don’t necessarily disagree with Marty, even if I think he’s diagnosing it wrong as a “numbers guy” problem. I’m not a big fan of three true outcomes ball either and I hope the move the mound and unjuice the ball to balance the game out a little more.

Agreed, it however has likely affected his work and thus us...the listeners.

I also think he's correct in the fact that it will swing back

Sure, I think it was kind of surprising how starkly he admitted he doesn’t really like baseball anymore.
