What if Votto were put on waivers?

It's been brought up several times that Oh, Canada! has a "No trade clause" in his contract.......but is there anything that says we can't waive him and save $100,000,000+ (of course with the hopes that a contender picks him up)??

Remember when they used to say "There are no dumb questions".

    They were wrong.
The lowest acceptable payroll amount for ownership to show they are not greedy pigs is 15 million more than they are currently paying. No matter what that currently is.

Is there anything stopping the Reds front office from faking their own deaths and getting Votto to sign a condolences card that, upon being signed, is revealed to actually be a legally binding contract stating he forfeits the rest of his contract with the Reds?

I think the Reds should trade Votto to the Mets in the offseason for Pete Alonso, Jeff McNeil and Michael Conforto.

Totally willing to toss in Jose Peraza to sweeten the pot.

    I'd be cool with that.
    Something like:
"With the New Rules This August What Will Happen If/When the Reds Place 1B Joey Votto on Waivers?"

(that just sounds like a ridiculously long thread title) lol

I get that kind of offer in fantasy baseball about every other week.

    Re: Votto on Waivers

Players are often waived in August that a team has no intention of releasing, now, with the new rules, there is no reason to. Yes Rece, they could waive Joey, DFA him or whatever but they are still on the hook for his whole salary, this isn't the non guaranted NFL. So the Reds have to pay Joey's contract in any manner of releasing him that I can thnk of outside of an actual trade. You wanna keep a superstar you gotta pay for the tail end of his career as well as as the good years and it looks like the collector is calling.
99% of all numbers only tell 33% of the story so when looking at the numbers remember that numbers is plural...

Bob doesn't need the money Votto is getting, he has plenty to spend on the Reds.

However, if he's claimed off waivers then the rest of his contract (including what he's still owed this year) automatically becomes the responsibility of whichever team places the waiver claim, correct!?

What do you think the chances are of a big market team that wants to Win It All this season putting in a waiver claim on Joey Votto??
