He’s a 29 year old lefty with no success at the MLB level.

I seriously doubt he lasts the entire off season on the 40 man roster.

Oh, I was thinking of the righty Josh Smith that came up thru the Reds system.

While you are correct he has not had success at the MLB level, he has only had 12 2/3 innings worth of a chance to make an impact. He posted great strikeout numbers in AAA last year and is certainly more deserving of a 40-man spot than Graterol.

Bad start when you're picking up players not even the Marlins wanted.

And I predict he won't be on the Reds 40 man roster in 2 months time.

    True, but faint praise.

The Marlins didn't want Luis Castillo.

Smith isn't Castillo, but let's not pretend the Marlins have anything resembling a clue.

They also managed to sell off Stanton, Yelich and Ozuna for very little in return.

I’ve been fairly critical of The Reds front office over the years. If you note my signature line, it still contains a quote from when they retained Bryan Price for what would be a fifth season before finally wising up and canning him 18 games in.

But while I do think they botched huge portions of the rebuild early on, they’ve also made some fairly smart moves too.

Picking up Sonny Gray and extending him dirt cheap was a master stroke.

Turning Alfredo Simon into Eugenio Suarez and then extending him dirt cheap, both great moves.

Turning Dan Straily into Luis Castillo? Great move.

Picking up Scooted Gennett off the scrap heap? Solid move.

They’re making some fairly solid organizational changes and while they should have been doing that 2-3 years ago, at least they’re doing that now and to such a degree that a highly sought after analytics consultant referred to them as being hands down ahead of the rest of the league.

There’s definitely been some bad but also plenty of positives and reason for optimism.

If you’ve followed The Marlins at all since Jeter took over, it’s a circus. It was a circus under Loria and Samson too. They deserve to be mocked.

Re: Reds Claim Josh Smith, DFA Juan Graterol

So taking a look at Mr Smith, one would suspect that for the most part this is a pickup for AAA depth. He has 2 options left. He actually put up pretty good AAA numbers in 2019. More innings pitched that hits and more strikeouts than inninngs. ERA of 2.73. This year he had reverse splits. In previous years he has not.

Although we claimed him from Miami he spent most of 2019 in Cleveland's system. Makes me wonder if there's a chance that Bauer had some interactions with him during spring training or in his very limited time in majors, and told the Reds to take a chance on him.

Probably not but you never know.

Collecting LOOGY's with a modicum of success against righties in advance of the 3 batter rule change in 2020.

    Gotta start somewhere.
