    Black Sabbath—Black Sabbath
    War Pigs—Black Sabbath
    Taxman—Beatles
    Back in Black—AC/DC
    Highway to Hell—AC/DC

If those don’t get the voltage in your brain humming, you’re not alive.

On the lower energy spectrum, I’ve always loved the opening of the Zuma version of “Cortez the Killer.”

Not saying it’s the best or close to it but check out the song Wasted Days by Cloud Nothings. Great opening and an even better ending.

Re: Best Intro to a Rock-n-Roll Song

Probably every AC/DC song qualifies. Malcom and Angus might be the all-time best at intros. I'll go with the intro eulogy to Bon Scott on "Hell's Bells".

Ramones "Blitzkreig Bop" is beyond iconic.

And I'm a sucker for a bass intro, so let's toss two more on the fire. First, Fugazi "Waiting Room".

    Next, Kasabian "Club Foot".

    I'm not a system player. I am a system.

Too many people just posting their favorite riff. Where’s the originality?

Sports stadium songs seem to always come out of left field but with an intro like this I get it.

Have to list this one because how many other songs can claim its catchiest line is the first?

Is it a RedsZone music thread if there’s no Dino Jr? They have many to choose from.

I mean great riffs are great. I can go deep cut but I’m not really into dick-measuring contests. Plus, if no one knows the opening, is it really one of the greatest? I can point to Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 intros that I personally love more than Jimi Hendrix’s “Machine Gun,” but put through the filter of recognizability, I totally get why “Machine Gun” is greater.

Idk what you’re going off about there’s a nearly unlimited catalog of rock music maybe just pick a song with an intro that isn’t just the riff that plays repetitively over the rest of the song.

Um rock is pretty much all riffs. It’s not Mozart. And it’s “intros,” not songs, right? How can one not hear the palm-muted six count at the beginning of “Back in Black” and not get goosebumps? Or the quiet after the first chord of “Highway to Hell?”

Here’s one: Elvis Costello’s breathless, unaccompanied opening to “No Action” on This Year’s Model. Again, probably not a second and a half before the Farfisa organ and drums kick in, but it’s such a great moment.

I see they have a Live at Shea ‘82 album being released in the spring.

Tom Araya’s heaven-rending scream at the beginning of “Angel of Death.”

The chorus-drenched first chord of “Purple Rain.”

The weird cymbal, hi-hat, floor tom drumming of the Pixies’ “Bone Machine.”

The train roll fill that opens “Carry Me, Ohio” by Sun Kil Moon.

Steve Earle’s drums and Greg Dulli’s “Now” at the opening of “Gentlemen.”

The eerie radio transmission under the drum intro to “Sound on Sound” by Austin’s inimitable Big Boys.

    Fine, here you go

Whether it is a rock song is another question

Phish - Stealing Time From the Faulty Plan

Love the guitar intro and the first lyric "GOT A BLANK SPACE WHERE MY MIND SHOULD BE"

When you are high off your ass in a crowd of 40,000 dancing and sweating and 2 hours into a show this intro begins you lose your mind for a few moments.
