It would be kind of fun to start one now.... what a great history to have when he finally does make it. Must include who the Reds are playing, the pitcher, and the pitch count. Will be cool to look at later, even if the FO isn't smart enough to sign him to a LT contract soon.

I just hope he still belongs to the Reds when he reaches such a milestone.

    Re: Griffey #500 countdown

I'm calling my shot! Assuming Griffey stays relatively heatly, and keeps producing at an about average rate that you'd expect from Griff these days, I expect him to hit #500 in @ 30-40 more games. The good news? 30 games from now (June 24th), the redlegs begin a 9 game homestand (Pitt, Mets, Tribe) meaning he has an excellant chance to hit #500 @ home and help w/ an attendance drive leading up to the milestone.

Note: If griffey goes on one of his seattle era homerun hitting sprees, he may just break the record on the next homestand; completely nullyfing my previously called shot.

Heard on extra innings that the reds have now put up a banner in centerfield marking down the countdown to 500, meaning we dont' have to worry about them doing something stupid & trading him away before he hits 500.

Homer chase is on for Jr.

He's only 10 short of being 20th to hit 500

    By Kevin Kelly
    The Cincinnati Enquirer

The countdown to 500 began Sunday at Great American Ball Park.

Minutes after Reds center fielder Ken Griffey Jr. hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning, a black sheet was removed from a small landing between the stadium's replica smoke stacks.

Beneath the sheet was a rectangular tote board showing Griffey's career home run total in oversized white letters.

Sunday's home run off Astros starting pitcher Wade Miller was the 490th of his career.

"It gives the fans something to look forward to," said Griffey, who approved the countdown sign when team officials approached him with the idea recently. "Any time there's a countdown to something - there was a countdown to the new ball park - people get excited."

Griffey is 22nd on the all-time home run list, one behind Fred McGriff (491) and three behind Lou Gehrig (493).

When he does reach 500, Griffey will become just the 20th ballplayer to do so. The 34-year-old is batting .237 with nine homers and a team-leading 31 RBI in 40 games this season.

Reds chief operating officer John Allen came up with the idea for the tote board, which also includes a small logo depicting Griffey swinging.

Numbers will be changed between innings and not immediately after Griffey hits a home run, Allen said.

    Associated Press

CINCINNATI -- Ken Griffey Jr. hit career homer No. 492 in the sixth inning Tuesday night off Florida's Josh Beckett, then glared into the Marlins' dugout as he rounded third base.

Griffey's third homer in the Reds' last three games moved him ahead of Fred McGriff into sole possession of 21st place on the career list.

Griffey also had a rare display of emotion as he rounded the bases on his 11th homer of the season.

Florida manager Jack McKeon chose to intentionally walk Sean Casey, who leads the National League in hitting, with Ryan Freel on second base and one out in the sixth inning. The score was tied at 1.

It was the third time in the last five days that an opponent decided to walk Casey to pitch to Griffey, who evidently took it as a slight. He hit Beckett's first pitch deep into the seats in right field, watching the ball fly as he took his first few steps out of the batter's box.

Griffey, who rarely shows emotion on the field, turned his head and glared at the Marlins for several steps after he rounded third base.

Houston Astros manager Jimy Williams intentionally walked Casey twice to pitch to Griffey during the Reds' four-game sweep. Griffey hit a tiebreaking, two-run double Friday in a 7-4 win, then grounded out Monday in a 7-5 victory.

Beckett became the 310th pitcher to allow a homer to Griffey.
