Re: 2004 Cincinnati Reds MLB Draft Selections

    FWIW,

Craig Burley at the Batters Box did a comprehensive study of all college hitters and listed all hitters, adjusting for strength of schedule and park factors. The Reds college hitters were rated as follows(note, this listed included all college hitters, not just draft eligibles, and doesn't adjust for position):

    2.OF-BJ Szymanski(Princeton) 153rd
    3.C-Craig Tatum(Mississippi St) 323rd
    5.SS-Paul Janish(Rice University) 92nd
    9.2B-Trevor Lawhorn(East Carolina) 104th
    12.OF-Cody Strait(Evansville U) 137th
    13.IF-Drew Anderson(Ohio St) 443rd
    15.3B-JD Reninger(Texas) 702nd

looks to me like Janish should be left at SS for now.

BTW, Burley lists Jason Urquidez as the 23rd best college pitcher this season. Maybe a steal for the Reds in the 11th round.

    Tatum (from his hometown paper):
Tatum, meanwhile, provided a steady presence behind the plate while batting .325 with 13 homers and 60 RBIs for Mississippi State. The Cincinnati Reds took Tatum in the third round, and it's a good bet the former Hattiesburg High School star will soon sign a professional contract.

"I already got a Reds hat," Tatum said. "The Reds told me they have a desperate need for a catcher. It's been fun. I'm just glad I was able to share the experience with my parents and my girlfriend. In high school, I thought I'd be drafted, and it never happened."

Tatum was my runner-up for "first to show" but I just 'had' to choose a pitcher after princeton snapped up a position player for the first time ever (Symantics)

Sounds like somebody isn't as sold on Miguel Perez as we've been hearing...

The Reds would be lucky if they signed half their draft picks. Last year they didn't even hit that many. If they sign thirty or more, that's a great job.

You've gotta figure Jason's a short-timer. He's passed his peak of pay-versus-production for the Cincy budget and is rapidly descending down the far side of the hill.
