The drafting team retains rights until next year's draft unless the player goes to a 4-year college. So he could play in the Cape Cod League, independent leagues, Mexican league, go to a junior college, work independently, rehab, whatever while the organization continues to negotiate. The most common route is to go to a junior college, see if they can get stronger or healthier or show something to indicate they're worth signing, and then either do a deal or don't.

Calvin Medlock went the Juco route after being selected out of HS. In a lot of cases they've probably indicated to teams that they're not enrolling in a four-year college.

The other reason to take a high schooler this late is if he's a big talent and you think you might be able to woo him with an unexpected bonus should your budget allow it.

Speaking of Ronda and Lewis, where are they playing this season?

They should be playing for Billings starting on June 18.
