Early reports suggest A&E might broadcast the edited version in prime time, followed by the unedited one in late night.
Good move. Satisfy both types of audience.

I've seen Seasons 1-4 on DVD. I can't wait to catch up on the newer seasons so I can start watching the show at its normal time.

The article states that HBO often filmed two versions of potentially "disturbing" scenes -- one for HBO, and a less "disturbing" version for in-flight viewing/syndication. So I imagine the edited version of the show will still contain all the story elements, though without the same edginess of the regular version.

Season 5 was great Johnny. I'd say the second best behind season 1. You're in for a treat.

As for the edited stuff, I've seen an episode of Sex and the City on TBS edited and it's done really well. Since they shot alternate versions as well, you really can't tell. It's not like watching the Breakfast Club edited-for-TV version on tv. "Flip you! No FLIP YOU!"
