But we also have an overcrowded prison system.

Really? Do you have any figures? I'm not calling you out, but if I use this argument somewhere else, I'd like to have something to back it up with.

The day we let cost influence this decision will be a very sad day indeed.

I believe the cost of executing a prisoner assumes the maximum number of appeals allowable over the maximum time allowable. A prisoner can stay on death row for 20 years or so (as did the "Cincinnati Killer") and appeal many times.

That's why I'm in favor of labor for convicted felons. Make felons contribute to society rather than living off tax dollars.

Couldn't have said it any better.

The other day the Supreme Court abolished the death penalty for minor offenders. Until they did so, the U.S. and Somalia (yep, you heard that correctly, Somalia) were the only countries that allowed this kind of barbarism to be perpetuated.

Mentally retarded people are put to death right and left in this country.

There but for the grace of God....

If you oppose "big government" then you should definitely oppose the death penalty.

It's obscene to me to hear the death penalty used in arguments over money.

I think Rojo's point is that the death penalty represents the most glaring of governmental interventions: the taking of a life for a crime. Government can't get much more intrusive than shutting down your organs.

    Why? Appeals?

Yes. That was my point. The more authoritarian the government, the more executions.

My bad. Didn't mean to project that on you, Rojo.

I struggle with it as well.

The death penalty has been proven to not be a deterrent. That is, the existence of a death penalty has no effect on the murder rate. So that argument doesn't hold water.

The only reason I can see it existing is for revenge, in an eye-for-an-eye Old Testament kind of way. Whether or not that is a valid reason is what I struggle with.

If my child was raped and murdered, my rage would have no bounds. I would have no doubt in my mind that the perpetrator should be dead.

Whether or not that is moral and just thing to do is a whole different question. I can't quite pull those two ends together yet.
