    Re: 2005 Draft Thread

For those not feeling the Travis Wood pick: Writeup per MLB draftcaster.

Comments: Throws w/ solid mechanics. FB darts around in the zone. Willing to pitch inside. Curve features nice rotation and good downward action. Circle change shows good movement down and away from RHH.

I looked at the MLB video of Wood. His mechanics look good. Loose, fast arm and he repeats very well. Fastball was at 90-91, then he popped a few at 93-94. His command looked solid. Changeup was impressive, in the low 70s with good deception and nice movement away from righties. Curveball definitely his worst pitch -- looked like he tends to leave it high, though it did have decent downward break.

In my opinion, this kid is in no way the one-dimensional rear-back-and-fire thrower with bad mechanics as he was characterized by BA. I think the MLB report is much more on target.

    Take a look for yourself.

On the other hand, the video of Ward shows a guy with odd mechanics. Cetainly doesn't disqualify him as a good prospect in my book, but he is unorthodox. Wicked, wicked breaking ball.

that's 2 6'8" pitchers taken by the reds so far. I think they are trying to buffer their "average height of pitchers" drafted metric.

Johnson was a 39th round pick (Pirates) in 2001. He has a smooth left handed stroke, good speed and a durable frame.

I'm thinking Johnson may be a similar player to Chris Dickerson. If so, good pick here.

The Mets took a player named Tomasiewiecz.

Their equipment manager's going to commit suicide.

I think you are right. The Reds did have a player from South Aiken HS, but I can't remember who it was....someone from the late 90's team.

Gookie, Pokey, Cameron, one of those guys.
