Re: Game Thread / Lineups 6/14 vs BOS

Boston hopes David Wells and Manny Ramirez continue their resurgence as the Red Sox and Cincinnati Reds play the second of three games at Fenway Park.
Wells began his first season in Boston 2-4 with a 6.81 ERA over his first seven starts before settling down to go 2-0 with a 2.32 ERA over his last three outings. The left-hander has pitched at least seven innings and walked none over that span.

Wells threw eight innings of four-hit ball to lift the Red Sox to a 4-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday.

``I don't think I made a bad pitch,'' Wells said. ``It's just something that's a rarity. When you feel that good, you just go with it.''

While Wells has turned things around on the mound, Ramirez seems to have broken out of a rare slump at the plate.

Ramirez's three-run home run led Boston to a 10-3 win over Cincinnati on Monday.

Ramirez has 13 homers and 49 RBIs. He went 2-for-5 to raise his batting average to .254 and is hitting .339 in his last 14 games.

``Manny's going to hit,'' teammate Jay Payton said. ``Everybody gets on him because his average isn't .320, but he's still hitting some homers and driving in runs and Manny's going to have his (usual) numbers at the end of the year.''

The Red Sox pounded out 16 hits against the Reds, one day after notching 17 in a win over the Chicago Cubs.

Monday's loss was just the second in seven games for Cincinnati.

First baseman Sean Casey went 1-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to nine games. Casey is batting .378 (14-for-37) since June 4 to lift his team-leading batting average from .313 to .325

I'll say New England by a touchdown. Again. 9-2 (?)

If he didn't have to bat he might.

I'd forgotten how bad Bob Boone sucked as a hitter.

C'mon, that's one season, his second in the majors. He was a light stick, but he ended up with a respectable .248 career BA, hit .291 as a career high in '77, and from '77-81 hit in the .270s. If Dane could even sniff those numbers, we'd have ourselves a legit prospect. Sundberg was no slouch at the plate in his prime and was one of the best defensive catchers of the period.
